Three Up
Grand Forks Red River. The Roughriders lost the opener to Minot and the wonder was how good will they be. They then limped to a win over Fargo South by two scores and the wonder was there. Since then they have picked up two really nice wins over Wahpeton by a wide margin and they won a key game over WF Sheyenne in overtime. Austin Slaughter had 27 and Mark Toe had 26 for GFRR in that big win on Tuesday.
Dickinson Trinity. Defeating Shiloh Christian in the opener is a huge boost for the Titans. In a massive clash to start the year the Titans defended their homecourt with a 62-56 victory. They also beat Killdeer but the reason they have grabbed attention is that opener. Shiloh was not able to deal with Shawn Stoltz who scored 28 points on 9 of 14 shooting plus grabbed nine rebounds.
Kenmare. The Honkers are another team that opened with a tough challenge but was able to beat Trinity Christian by six on the road and then open the Velva Tournament with a win against South Prairie. Kenmare needed a boost with even host Velva/Sawyer followed by Bishop Ryan so early in the year and they got it with that six point road win.
Three Down
WF Sheyenne. The Mustangs are looking at several winnable games in front of them as they should be able to win four of the next five at least. They need to after dropping games to Fargo North by 13 and losing to GFRR in overtime. Those are tough opponents but this is a team with expectations for a big season. Losing those games is a setback and now they need to go on a winning streak beating who they should and winning at least one, if not both of the Valley City and Fargo Shanley games.
New Rockford-Sheyenne. Hosting a solid Carrington squad, Jack Schaefer and his team lost 63-60 and began the year on a sour note. Is it a big deal to lose one game? Not at all but it is an early setback against expectations. The game was close which made it even more mentally painful. Expect them to bounce back tonight against Rolla.
Jamestown. A year ago the Jays were 13-11 with a senior led group. This is a new team so having a big year isn’t quite expected but there are teams they thought they could potentially beat. Like Mandan and Bismarck are teams they hoped to maybe get a win from. Mandan crushed them by 29 and Bismarck beat Jamestown by 14. Another tough part is starting the season with four road games.
