Three Up
Faribault (3-0). An 11 point win over Northfield, beating Sauk Rapids-Rice by 25 at the Tip Off Classic, going on the long road trip to Winona and winning, these are all early positives from the Faribault Falcon season. It gets tougher with Austin and JM being the next games but the Falcons look like they are for real. Cody Ehlers, Chase Ernst, and Joe Jackson have played well as complimentary pieces to Kade Hart and TJ Hunt who are the top returning guys.
Coon Rapids (3-0). A year ago Coon Rapids was 3-24, they are 3-0 right now. A year ago Elk River beat them 65-31 and 74-64, what a difference a year makes as the Cards turned it around and won 54-51. Coon Rapids also beat Forest Lake and hammered White Bear Lake by 32. Looking at the Coon Rapids schedule they have a very real chance at being 6-2 going into their game at Champlin Park. Lionel Warner has stepped up to be the standout that we saw at the Top 250 Expo. He’s scored 65 points in those first three games with help from Dayo Lawal and Tyree’on Johnson.
Rosemount (4-0). Rosemount will be favored in their upcoming games with Burnsville and Minneapolis Washburn. If they win those two games and go 6-0 they will have matched last year’s win total. The Irish beat Hastings and Roseville by double figures and then had nice wins over BSM and Woodbury. Alec Loehr is scoring 20 a game, Luke Loehr 19 a contest, and Luke Siwek and Myka Edmonds are stepping up to play key roles.
Three Down
St. Paul Johnson (0-3). With a massive graduation, few juniors, and a couple transfers we knew that it would be a tough year for the Governors. Nobody expected a 44 point loss to Woodbury, 21 point loss to Milwaukee Vincent, and a two score loss to Grand Rapids. With Prairie Seeds, Hopkins, Centennial, Brooklyn Center, and others on the horizon things won’t get easier. Justin Yang and Kyle Lee are solid players for Coach Simmons so they should be solid in the St. Paul City Conference games coming up soon.
Byron (0-4). The Byron Bears have a nice group of talent coming back so a tough schedule with Northfield, Austin, Waconia, and Pine Island to start the year looked like something they could handle. So far with two double figures losses and no wins it has been a struggle. Lourdes is next Friday and Byron needs to get a win or a season that looked like it had potential will start 0-5.
Shakopee (0-3). A step back this year is not a surprise. Steffon Mitchell and others graduating with few guys returning from the rotation leads to a step back. Getting beat by double figures every game including a 29 point loss to Edina was not expected. The schedule early has been tough with Jefferson, New Prague, and Edina, but usually Shakopee is able to handle it better than they have.
