Three Up
West Fargo. A season opening 11 point win over Devils Lake (82-71) is a nice way to get the year going. They play a very winnable game Saturday at South and then have Shanley on Tuesday. The defending state runner-up is a very athletic team with Raiden Forrest attacking for big numbers, Simon Habonamin pushing the pace, 6-foot-4 John Morton and 6-foot-3 Abdi Sufi both being long and agile wings, and then you add the shooting of Joe Pistorius and you have a dangerous bunch.
Turtle Mountain. The Braves won four games last year so they are half way to that total already with a 14 point win over Williston and a 26 point win over Grand Forks Central. Dickinson and Legacy are up next so the steps they’ve taken will be easier to know.
Minot. Two time defending champs and things are slowing down. They knocked out GFRR scoring 89 points in the opener (89-75). The Roughriders are not known for being consistent but they do have a lot of talent so putting up 89 is noteworthy. Justin Engg was making big shots while KyJuan Johnson made sure the ball was shared in all directions. GFRR simply couldn’t move their defense in a disciplined way to defend the Minot ball movement.
Three Down
Grand Forks Red River. On one hand, game one was Minot so you have to give them some leeway. On the other hand, this team has too much talent to be so inconsistent defensively. Giving up 89 points to anybody when you have that type of length and agility is simply too much.
Devils Lake. This is the year. There are expectations and if this group is going to win the time is now. Losing to West Fargo by double figures to start the year is very much a let down. The season doesn’t get any easier with Fargo Davies being on the schedule tomorrow. Central and Fargo South are coming up though followed by Shanley who is a team they should beat.
Grand Forks Central. The program has struggled, we get that. But scoring only 51 points and losing by 26 to a Turtle Mountain team that won only four games last year, that is not to promising. They have now won only 3 of their last 55 games and currently have a 43 game losing streak going.
