The Covington Tournament featured a pair of intriguing games with Ponchatoula sliding by Bogalusa, 61-58, in overtime, St. Paul’s handling Franklinton, 77-57, and both matchups included some potential Division I talent.
The Doyle Tournament pitted a few local teams against one another in Springfield and Loranger but Albany’s Sean Sykes was the main attraction in a close contest against Parkview Baptist. The 2017 G finished with 33 points in the game but it wasn’t enough to top the Eagles, who won at the buzzer on a layup by 2018 G De’Merius Shropshire.
The Ponchatoula Jamboree back on November 12 didn’t officially count but it was a good warmup for four teams with Amite stealing a 25-24 win over Hammond while Ponchatoula took care of Independence, 36-23. 2018 W/F Melvin Baker had 16 points in the loss for Independence and is a player that could be a steal for a program on the next level.
