Andrean knocked off Lake Central, 72-66
In a bit of a surprise, you saw Andrean get a close win over Lake Central. Andrean only won 9 games last season and lost their two best players in the offseason. So, to say this was a good way to start the season is a bit of an understatement. Junior guard James Hudson had 22 points, 6 steals for Andrean. Senior guard Joe Graziano had 24 and IU-South Bend commit Norell Smith had 14 for Lake Central.
Central Christian beat Waldron, 74-69
Two years ago, Central Christian didn’t win a single game. They went 0-23 on the year. Then last year, they had their best season since 2009-10 and it all started with a win over Waldron by just three points. This year, they did it again and beat Waldron by 5. Could this be the start of another big season for Central Christian? Junior guard Michael Roberson led Central Christian with 29 points and 8 rebounds. Senior forward Hank Johnson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Waldron.
Gary Roosevelt beat Bowman Academy 65-61.
Gary Roosevelt was bad last year, really bad. They only won 6 games out of 22 and at times struggled to score points. Bowman Academy has been a force in the Region for a while now but they have had to reboot a bit. In the first game of the season, Roosevelt made a statement of sorts with a close victory. Senior guard Deon Moore hit a big three with 4.6 seconds to seal the win. Bowman’s Langston Stalling had 18 points while Roosevelt junior wing Latrell Williams had 19 points for Roosevelt.
University and Floyd Central Cruise to easy wins
Floyd Central used a 20-0 run in the first half to help get the win. Junior guard Luke Gohmann and sophomore forward Cobie Barnes had 13 each on 11 of 17 shooting. Gohmann scored the first 7 points for Floyd.
University beat Shortridge behind David Howard’s 18 points and 7 rebounds to get their first win of the season. University is expected to be one of the best teams in 1A this year with as much size and depth as anyone in that class.
Culver Academies beat Indianapolis Homeschool 70-54
In the Culver and Indianapolis Homsechool matchup, you got a look at one of the better underclassmen in the state performing at a high level. Culver’s Ethan Brittain–Watts had 32 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds in the win. He’s already getting looks at the DI level including Wisconsin.
