He averaged 20 points and 6.5 rebounds last season as a junior with the Eagles, and subsequently caught the eye of several area Division III coaches.
“I’ve been contacted by Loras, Dubuque, Iowa Wesleyan, Coe and a couple other Division III schools. It’s all just D3 right now, and I’m not sure where I want to go and what I want to do yet,” said Martens, who has visited Loras and Dubuque so far.
“They were nice. Dubuque has a solid program and has been really successful the last couple of years. Whereas Loras has a couple new coaches and they’re doing a good job with the program up there, so that’s good.”
Martens is also a football standout, and is in the midst of one of the finer quarterbacking seasons in Iowa. He’s thrown for 2,298 yards and 27 touchdowns this season, with only four interceptions.
Still, he says hoops is his preference.
“I’m probably leaning more towards basketball, football is fine but I can’t see myself playing college football,” said Martens.
“I’m probably going to take a couple more (basketball) visits, and then start to try and figure things out.”
With great size, and an ability to shoot the ball and be versatile, Martens is a two-way player who dominates at the 1A level.
“Some of my strengths are shooting and rebounding, I’m pretty efficient from beyond the arc, and I have good size so I can rebound pretty well,” said Martens.
“I’m really comfortable both in the paint and on the perimeter, and wherever I’m needed I can play.”
With his senior season starting in just two weeks, we had Martens lay out his personal goals and team goals for the upcoming season.
“Our goal is always to win the conference and go as far as we can in postseason play. And we’re going to have a little different look this season, we have a new coach so we’re going to have to work all that out in the beginning of the season,” he said.
“I just want to do my best to help my team win, if that means scoring 20 points per game I’ll do that, if that means scoring 5 points I’ll do that, just as long as we get the win.”
