Both High School and Middle School gyms were hosting games throughout the day. Our staff focused on the varsity games played in the High School Gym. A special thank you to Coach Campbell and his Bourbon County coaching staff for putting this event together! We’ve split our recap into four sections: Recap Pt. 1 & Recap Pt. 2, and Top Performers: Guards & Top Performers: Wings/Forwards.
Bracken County vs Model
In a clash of two All “A” teams started steadily with a mix of uptempo transition and half-court execution. Both teams found consistency driving the paint and finding shooters along the perimeter. Bracken County used a strong defensive third quarter to force Model into ill-timed turnovers. The Polar Bears were led by the duo of Blake Reed Blake Reed 5'10" | PG Mason County | 2024 KY and Cayden Reed Cayden Reed 5'9" | PG Mason County | 2025 KY . Blake found a groove and stayed hot hitting shots from several feet beyond the 3-point line. He displayed his creative ability to get shots off anywhere on the court. Ultimately, Bracken County had too many offensive weapons and overpowered Model.
Paris vs Berea
This game was the tale of two halves for these All “A” teams. Berea maintained an early lead for most of the first three quarters, powered by Trenton Wilson Trenton Wilson 6'2" | SG Rockcastle | 2024 State KY . But Paris found a rhythm late and clawed back into the game. The Greyhounds were led by Malachi Ashford and Tyzian White. White’s surge of aggressive energy sparked the Greyhounds to a big comeback that ultimately came up short. He went on a stretch scoring or assisting on 15 straight baskets. However, in crunch time, Berea‘s Wilson used his energy and effort to keep them in the game. Wilson possesses a high basketball IQ that gave him a calm demeanor throughout.
Montgomery County vs Tates Creek
This was a great opening barometer for both teams. Tates Creek is looking to make a splash in the wide-open 43rd District. Montgomery County is coming off a 10th Region quarterfinal appearance and looking for a new identity this season. This game was dominated by the Commodores scoring duo of Cobi Commodore Cobi Commodore 6'0" | CG Tates Creek | 2023 State KY and Eric Hackett Eric Hackett 6'2" | SG Tates Creek | 2023 State KY . Both players look much improved from last season. The Indians never found a sustainable rhythm and looked out of sync for most of the second half. Tates Creek cruised to a double-digit victory.
Lexington Christian Academy vs Bourbon County
Host school, Bourbon County, played in the nightcap. This matchup had it all: press defense, transfers, zone defense, impact freshmen, and late-game execution. Bourbon County stayed in the lead for most of the contest but never pulled away. Coach Campbell was searching for a lineup to gel but unforced turnovers and missed assignments hurt their rhythm. The Colonels were led by point guard Todd Dumphord Todd Dumphord 5'9" | PG Bourbon County | 2023 State KY and his defense. LCA’s half-court offense had trouble stringing together consecutive successful trips but their consistent press defense led to open layups. In the closing minute of the game, Tyler Hall had the jump shot that gave LCA the victory.
