Both High School and Middle School gyms were hosting games throughout the day. Our staff focused on the varsity games played in the High School Gym. A special thank you to Coach Campbell and his Bourbon County coaching staff for putting this event together! We’ve split our recap into four sections: Recap Pt. 1 & Recap Pt. 2, and Top Performers: Guards & Top Performers: Wings/Forwards.
Lafayette vs Danville
The first half started slow but both teams began to settle in and traded baskets. Lafayette used their press defense which led to deflections and steals leading to layups and 3s. Once Danville adjusted to the press, they did a solid job of executing their half-court team offense and found rhythm moving the ball to the open shooters. The second half was controlled by Danville, specifically Dante Hayden Dante Hayden 5'11" | CG Danville | 2022 State KY . Hayden puts enormous stress on the defense by his ability to shoot from 25+ feet and straight-line drives to the rim. Hayden plays with the type of confidence and leadership that you need from a ball-dominant scoring guard. His mix of shooting, slashing, and setting up teammates was on full display Saturday.
Bryan Station vs Frankfort
This game started hot with one of the highest-scoring first quarters of the day. Bryan Station’s press defense turned up the energy that led to easy baskets for both teams. Frankfort was able to withstand the barrage of turnovers by attacking the paint and getting points from the free-throw line. Jaden Green and the Defenders opened the second half with a surge. Green plays with intention and determination that puts him around the ball all the time. He attacks the ball with purpose and is rewarded with open shots and put-back layups.
Henry Clay vs Campbell County
Certainly the most chippy and chatty game of the day. Campbell County started knocking down shots early and often which caused Henry Clay to force the issue. The highlight of the day came from a contested dunk by Kanye Henderson Kanye Henderson 6'3" | SG Henry Clay | 2022 State KY during a drive to the rim. That dunk sparked Henderson to take over the rest of the game. His speed, athleticism, and playmaking ability made him unguardable in the open court. Ultimately, Campbell ran out of gas and the outside shots were not falling. The Camels had a hard time containing Henderson as he feasted off layups and free throws.
Cooper vs Woodford County
Woodford was one of the most athletic rosters in the 8th region showcasing a barrage of pregame dunks. Unfortunately, their in-game offense was not equally as impressive. Cooper had shooters everywhere on the court and rarely took a contested shot. Both teams had rim protectors which altered most shots near the paint. Woodford looked for fast-break opportunities but was unable to capitalize consistently. Credit Cooper’s overall team defensive for making everything tough around the rim. John Mccrear John Mccrear 6'8" | PF Woodfard | 2023 State #219 Nation KY kept the Yellow Jackets in the contest with his outside shot and stimy defense.
