Micah Worsley
Micah Worsley
Worsley has become the go to guy for Wake Christian this year, and it’s showing in his stat lines. He posted a near triple double in their blowout win against Cape Fear Christian, dropping 33 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. He’s primarily a guy who likes to get his buckets inside by slashing off the dribble, and he is a strong bodied kid who can go through people to finish. He has shown he can step out and hit the three pointer when called upon too. Another underrated aspect of his game is his offensive rebounding; he uses his strength to fly in and drive opponents out of the way in order to grab a second chance, and is good at going back up through contact to finish those opportunities. He’s shown he can step up and score against higher level competition too, so as Wake Christian heads towards conference play, keep an eye out for him to post big stat lines just like he is now.
At this point, we need to be discussing whether Zion Walker Zion Walker 6’2″ | PG The Burlington School | 2024 State NC is the Gatorade Player of the Year in NC. He has been nothing short of brilliant for TBS so far this year, and capped it off with a 41 point explosion last night against Jordan. He is such a strong-bodied guard that is a threat to score every time he gets downhill and headed towards the rim. He’s a plus free throw shooter and draws fouls even when he doesn’t score, meaning that when the ball is in his hands, he is making some sort of positive offensive play with the ball. He’s effective as a defender and nuisance on and off the ball, denying catches and making sure the passing lanes are a no fly zone for passes to come through. There will be much more coverage on him, but this kid is for real.
Lash has had a big time last seven days, even as his team has started 1-4. Against some really talented squads, Lash averaged 25.3 points in 3 games last week, as well as posting an absurd 31 point 22 rebound stat line against a strong WS Christian team. He’s a big, stocky forward at 6’5 and about 220 pounds, which means he’s got interior scoring ability in droves. He is just more physical than almost anyone guarding him, and uses it to his advantage. He’s averaging 12 rebounds a game this year, and is a real two-way threat on the boards. 10 of his 22 rebounds against WS Christian were offensive, and he was able to create a lot of second chances from using his frame to bully people out of the way. He will continue to be a strong, undersized post presence that leads his team and provides some gaudy stat lines to look at over the rest of the year.
Xavier Johnson
Xavier Johnson
Xavier Johnson was on the other end of the TBS drubbing of Fayetteville Academy, but he impressed me quite a bit as well. He is a quick guard that does his damage in transition, and it’s hard to get a body in front of him due to his natural quickness and athleticism. He is a slashing guard that likes to get to the rim and beat the defense for layups and tough finishes at the rim, and can expand his range inside the arc to make plays off the dribble as well. He had 33 in a strong win over Terry Sanford, and showed his ability at the charity stripe too, knocking down 11/14 free throws. He’s a scoring threat when he’s in motion and gets the ball in his hands.
Tim Hall is such a solid, undersized 4 man that doesn’t get enough love for the work he puts in every night. He isn’t going to wow you with high flying finishes or knock down crazy jumpers, but he will post a double double every night and help his team win. He had 20 points in games against Fort Mill and Sun Valley, and also had 25 total rebounds over the two games. He finishes possessions on the defensive end with big rebounds and also pulls down misses on the offensive glass, looking to create a second chance opportunity for his team. He is one of the best guys in the state no one talks about in this 2023 class, and it will be no surprise to watch him finish this year with more positive performances like the two we saw last week.
Eli Clark
Eli Clark
Michael Wilson got love from us last week, but his teammate Eli Clark is our final top performer of this week. He stepped up with 57 combined points in big wins over Asheville Christian and Lincoln Charter last week, and is one of the better senior shooters in the state. He knocks down catch and shoot jumpers as well as threes off the pick and roll, and is not afraid to take and make big shots. He is a winner and it shows every time he steps on the court with confidence and leadership. He would be a great get for any D3 school, and hopefully should continue to turn heads with more positive performances.
