Continue ReadingThe season is right around the corner, which means many of our top senior prospects are either in the midst of making their college commitments or awaiting signing day (tomorrow) to make it official with their intended program. It seemed like a good time for a refresher as to who remains on the market and who I believe should garner heavy interest as the season officially tips.
Austin Abrams Austin Abrams 6'3" | SG Mount St. Joseph | 2023 State MD | Mount St. Joseph
I’m left scratching my head as to why more Division I programs aren’t actively recruiting Abrams at the moment. The 6’3-6’4 senior guard was a key component in the Gaels’ pursuit of last year’s MIAA and BCL titles thanks to his sharpshooting from three. He followed that up with helping Team Thrill win the UAA 17U championship in July. Known for his picture-perfect shooting form, Abrams has added to his game since last high school season. He’s become more of a threat off the bounce and has improved his lateral quickness defensively. Making shots will always be at the top of most coach’s list in recruiting players. Abrams does that at a high level. He also understands how to win games.
Jaden Johnson Jaden Johnson 6'0" | PG Bishop McNamara | 2023 State MD | Bishop McNamara
Johnson is another available guard who has his share of intangibles that will help a college program. He took much of the spring to come back from injury and by the end of summer, started taking his usual form as being a downhill wrecking ball getting to the rim. Johnson is capable of making shots from deep off the catch and because of his burley frame at 6’1-6’2, can guard up a position or two at the high school level and hold his own even in the paint. Johnson plays with a competitive edge that coaches look for in tough-nosed guards.
Jake Stout Jake Stout 6'7" | PF Boys Latin | 2023 State MD | Boys’ Latin
Stout fits the role of being a combo forward at the next level. He’s 6’6 and is a guy the defense must account for with any catch on the perimeter. He has good shot preparation coming off pindowns and can quickly get into his fluid shooting stroke. He has some ability to put the ball on the deck, get to his spots in the mid-range and knock it down with balance. This season he should have the opportunity to prove himself as an improved athlete and overall defender as he shoulders much of the load for Boys’ Latin.
Malcolm Day Malcolm Day 6'5" | SF Old Mill | 2023 State MD | Takoma Academy
Day’s stock rose significantly this summer thanks to his play in various tournaments and showcases. He’s a 6’6 wing with length and athleticism that fit the college game. Day is an explosive finisher around the rim on drives or as a lob threat in transition. He demands respect from his defender on the catch because of his ability to knock down catch-and-shoot three’s. Over the last nine months Day has made improvements with his body. He put on some muscle and it shows with his confidence in embracing contact. He’ll need to continue to add size and keep that steady killer mentality when he’s on the floor in order to generate interests into offers.
Jaden Winston Jaden Winston 5'9" | PG DeMatha | 2023 State MD | DeMatha
It seems like with every passing year, we have more preseason high school events that occur. A little over a week ago, Winston used the stage against Sierra Canyon and Bronny James to make some noise for himself and this DeMatha team. He’s a gritty, tough point guard that’s relentless on both sides of the floor. What he lacks in size at 5’9 he makes up with his heart and is able to impact the game on both ends. His energy and fire spread through his teammates on the floor and he holds them to the same standard. This year’s DeMatha team may not have the usual four and five start prospects, but what they do have is a roster filled with guys who have a no quit mentality. Winston is at the forefront.
