Continue ReadingI thought I would go through and attempt to narrow down my choices for the top 3 players in each classification. I added wild card because I knew it was going to be a difficult task to choose just three. I could probably write this in twenty different ways each week, but here are my top 3 as of now. Ryan Morgan has already done the 2A all state teams for prephoops. My 2A is just a short list and it doesn’t include anyone that wasn’t already on the list.
Class 2B – Top 3 players and a wild card –
It probably wouldn’t matter how many times I wrote this, he would make the cut regardless. At 6 foot 7 inches tall, he’s a hybrid type guard who can play anywhere on the floor. He has the game to go on and help a division 1 school as more of a stretch three. I really like the way he scores off the bounce. He is able to use the dribble to get his shot virtually anytime he wants. With that size, playing on the perimeter, he is tough to stop. He likes to shoot the deep ball and does it well with a silky smooth jumper. He has been in the last two state championship games in 2B, and will be looking to lead a talented Brewster team to a third this season.
Highlights
To be honest, if I were to have done this last year at this time, he probably wouldn’t have been on the list of three. That has changed, and seeing him in person over the summer had a lot to do with it. He is an explosive above the rim type player. He has great size for a guard, and his athletic ability is unmatched at the 2B level. If you want to see some of the best players in 2B, there will be a weekend just before Christmas that will see Brewster host Davenport and Napavine. Three of the top teams in 2B and three of the best players in 2B. My wild card is from Napavine.
He is the best bucket getter in all of 2B in my opinion. He has over a thousand points already in his career and he is only a junior. 27 a game last season was a walk in the park for his skill-set. At 6’3, he can score on all levels and has an arsenal of shots and moves that seem effortless to him. I’m not sure if people realize how good of a three point shooter he is either. He has one of the most effortless and picture perfect looking shots you’ll find on any level. He is also tough and hard nosed, getting buckets in the paint and on post ups. He can play point guard, or power forward, although he is best at the ball in hands position.
Wild card
He is another who is best at ball in his hands bucket getter position. He has made 107 threes in his career and he is only a junior. That said, I’m at a cross roads as to whether that is the best part of his game. As a matter of fact, I don’t think it is. He is really good at getting to the rim, and excellent in the open floor. He will find a way to score, as evidenced by his 20 a game last season and 15 his freshman year.
Class 1A top 3 and a wild card –
An absolute no brainer here. He is the best player in class 1A in my opinion and he is only a sophomore. He had himself a tremendous season last year as a freshman. This was an excellent team that he played on, and he was still able to manage 18 PPG. He is an all around player, who focuses on more than just scoring. He is excellent at getting steals and has active hands on defense. He rebounds, he will find the open man. He can do it all. He’s also a good athlete who can create for himself and finish with some high flying dunks. He’s got NBA range. Maybe the most impressive part of his game is his ability to finish in the lane or on the break. When you see this, you realize quickly how great of a talent and athlete he is.
Highlights
Here’s another sophomore who is well rounded with elite level skills. If you just looked at his stats from last season, you might think he was more of a post player since he averaged a double double. Not the case. He’s a guard that has a high motor to go along with his excellent skill-set. His mid-range pull up jumpers are the real deal. He shoots the three effortlessly and effectively. He’ll hammer dunks on the break or in traffic. He sets his shot up with some excellent moves and gets himself to the cup with a smoothness that is beyond his years and level. I’d say class 1A is in good hands with these two leading the way. He’s got a teammate in Hunter Carter Hunter Carter 6’5″ | CG Annie Wright | 2024 CO , who could have just as well been on this list.
This is a really tough choice and can see myself having more than one wild card in 1A. Navarre gets the nod this week as a versatile and active player at 6 foot 5 who plays more like a stretch three. He averaged over 20 a game last season. He’s got a really soft touch from all spots on the floor and gets his buckets at those spots. As active as he is, and the way he can run the floor, he should be a threat for a double double every night. I am talking more like a 26 and 13 guy. At least.
Wild card (s)
I am having a hard time not including a few players here. Tyler Sipma Tyler Sipma 6'0" | CG Lynden Christian | 2023 State WA , Boen Phelps Boen Phelps 6'2" | SG Freeman | 2023 State WA , Dylan Jay Dylan Jay 6'4" | SG Phhoenix Prep | 2024 State AZ . Congrats on making me re-format my article. You are the 1A ,wild cards.
Class 2A top 3 and a wild card
I would probably have to retire myself from writing these if I didn’t include him. He’s got one of the most unique skill sets in Washington high school basketball. Oregon State should be loving the fact that he has chosen the Beavers to continue his basketball career. At 6’11 he is almost a guard in a big man’s body. He can handle the ball, he lets it fly from long distance with a shot that looks as if he is a 2 guard. He is also a monster in the paint, blocking shots and hammering some backboard shaking dunks. He runs the floor. I know nothing of his early years of basketball, but it’s as if he hit a growth spurt of a foot somewhere along the line. Thus exploring the ball skills.
Highlights
He’s also one of those that plays the ball in hands scorer position. No, it’s not a real thing but I think it describes the urgency in which I am trying to explain these bucket getters. One of the best shooters in the state, without question. He is a better athlete than anyone who tries to guard him might know until after he drops 30. He will build on his 19PPG from a year ago and look to get his team back to the championship game, where they lost to a tough Lynden team.
Highlights
No worries, I know what some might be thinking. That’s why I have a, wild card. As for this kid, he’s about to blow up opposing teams with his scoring abilities. He finds ways to get to the bucket as well as anyone in 2A. He is strong and has good hops, both of which help him to finish with a purpose. I really like his ability to shoot off the dribble. He will do that from 25 feet and in. I might be selling him short. He rebounds. He rebounds. I felt like that needed to be said twice. He will have a 30 plus points, 20 rebound game this year. Mark my words.
Class 2A Wild Cards –
Cavin Holden Cavin Holden 6'1" | CG Ra Long | 2023 State WA , Anthony Canales Anthony Canales 6'4" | SG Lynden | 2024 State WA . I have to limit this to three or less and I if I go any further I won’t be able to.
