Because we have a plethora of those two positions, there are many guards and wings that go unnoticed. Going into the 2022-23 season, there are a number of guards and wings to watch this season. In this PHLA exclusive, we will look at ten guards and wings people should keep an eye on as the season progresses.
Cornelius Brown Cornelius Brown 5'9" | PG Kennedy | 2024 State LA (Kennedy / 6’0″)
Class 3A has a lot of exciting guards and Brown is possibly one of the better ones. Cornelius has an array of finishes at the rim and knows how to take contact and use the rim to avoid blocks. He also has the ability to break down his defender with the dribble and create scoring opportunities for himself and others. His ability to score as a point guard makes him very dangerous.
TJ Callahan TJ Callahan 6'0" | PG Episcopal | 2024 State LA (Episcopal / 6’0″)
Callahan is a point guard who can shift a game with his defense and his shooting. He is one of the more accurate point guard shooters I have seen and his defense on the ball can be suffocating. Callahan can play on or off the ball which helps him vary his attack and his ability to play both ends of the floor makes him an asset at all times.
Teddy Menard Teddy Menard 6'0" | CG Notre Dame | 2023 State LA (Notre Dame / 6’0″)
Menard is one of those guards that surprises opponents with what he can do. He is a stellar mid-range shooter who is very good at slashing and cutting to the rim. Menard is a guard that can make momentum plays as well. He has big bounce and will finish with thunder in transition or will catch a backdoor alley-oop for a score. His athleticism is hard to curtail and makes him a tough cover.
Damarcus Jack Damarcus Jack 6'3" | SF Elton | 2023 State LA (Elton / 6’2″)
Jack is an all-district basketball performer who has expanded his game over the years. He is a better shooter and he is a better driver of the ball going into his senior season. Jack has always been a force on the backboards and he should be once again this year. His paint scoring and inside play will be paramount for Elton to be successful this year.
Nick Bailey Nick Bailey 6'5" | SF Mansfield | 2023 State LA (Mansfield / 6’4″)
Before playing receiver, Bailey was a versatile, two-way wing for the Mansfield Wolverines. He is a force to be reckoned with on the hardwood because he has the length and height to defend multiple positions and he can take players of any size off the dribble. Bailey scores, sets screens, and rebounds as well. Playing to his potential will make him a force in Class 2A.
Jordan Davis Jordan Davis 6'1" | PG Ouachita | 2023 State LA (Ouachita / 5’11”)
Just like his brother before him, Jordan is a tough defender who can knock down an open jumper. He can get into the teeth of the defense and create for others or use his defensive skills to create turnovers. For the Lions to be at their best, Davis needs to set the tone on defense. His offense will take care of itself.
Konnor Cotton (Calvary Baptist / 6’1″)
Cotton is a guard who has shown two way ability in his first two seasons with the Cavs. Now, as a junior, Cotton will be expected to take that ability up another notch. He is very good at making the corner three and playing good help defense. Taking that next step and attacking the rim more will make him a legitimate threat at all times.
Luke Guidry Luke Guidry 6'0" | SG Ascension Episcopal | 2023 State LA (Ascension Episcopal / 5’11”)
Guidry can lull a defender to sleep with a slow dribble and then blow by or use the triple threat position to bury jumpers. He has college range from three and is a threat from anywhere behind the arc. Guidry is a guard defenders need to track when he walks in the gym or he will make them pay.
Bryson James Bryson James 6'1" | PG Plaquemine | 2024 State LA (Plaquemine / 6’0″)
James is what teams want in a point guard. He can facilitate, bury open jumpers, and create turnovers. His ability to turn defense into offense quickly makes him a threat to score at any time. James is definitely a vital cog in the Green Devils transition game and their overall offensive blueprint as a whole.
George Tillman George Tillman 6'2" | SG Airline | 2024 State LA (Airline / 6’1″)
Tillman fits the bill of an off guard or wing defender. He has long arms and good lateral movement which gives players fits on defense. On offense he is still a work in progress. However, he crashes the boards and can finish at the rim. If he continues to improve defensively, he will be a solid rotation player for the Vikings by district time.
With the number of guards and wings in Louisiana, there will be an abundance of players to see. The fun for coaches and fans to see these players begins on November 14th.
