Indiana High School Basketball teams are now allowed two on court days a week and we take that opportunity to start previewing the upcoming season. So far, I’ve visited Fishers, North Central, Avon, Connersville, Kokomo, Cathedral, Franklin, Crispus Attucks, Ben Davis, Richmond, Zionsville, Carmel, Bishop Chatard, Guerin Catholic, Noblesville, Center Grove, Bloomington South, New Castle, and Hamilton Southeastern. This week, I started off my travels with a trip to Seton Catholic. Let’s dive on in to what the Cardinals will have this season.
Roster Breakdown
After 11 seasons at the helm, head coach Josh Jurgens is 148-117 overall including six sectional championships. Seton Catholic, despite its extremely small size, has become a place that people all around the country may recognize now as the high school that Memphis Grizzlies star Desmond Bane attended. The former Indiana All-Star will not be walking through the doors of the Chuck Mosey Memorial Gym, but the Cardinals do have a good amount of talent to work with this season. Expect to see Seton get back to cutting down the Sectional 56 nets come March.
The headliners for Seton Catholic will be a pair of talented juniors in Mason Harvey and Braiden Hogg Braiden Hogg 6'1" | PG Richmond | 2024 State IN . These two had big sophomore seasons for the Cardinals, are coming off of great summers, and should be poised to have excellent junior campaigns. Harvey, at 6’7″, has excellent size for the Class 1A level. While his size makes him a force on the glass and allows him to block shots defensively, he is far from your traditional big man. Last season, Harvey made 47 of 120 three-point attempts (39.2%). He has deep range and is very dangerous trailing the play in transition or in the pick-and-pop. Harvey averaged a team-best 15.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game a year ago. As for Hogg, the dynamic guard averaged 13.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in his sophomore season. He is an excellent athlete with high level finishing skills at the rim. Hogg can break down the defense off of the bounce, gets paint touches consistently, and has continued to improve as a jump shooter. Look for him to really blossom this season as he takes on more of a lead guard role.
Overall, the Cardinals will still be a young team made up primarily of juniors and a talented sophomore class. However, senior Elijah Falcone is back after playing a significant role in the rotation last season. The 5’11” guard averaged 4.8 points per game as a junior and will be called upon to step into an expanded role. His veteran leadership will be valuable as the younger guys transition into varsity basketball. Junior guard Andrew Warner Andrew Warner 6'0" | SG Seton Catholic | 2024 IN is another returner who averaged 5.8 points per game last season and will provide some additional catch-and-shoot ability on the perimeter. There are a handful of others who have varsity experience, but Harvey, Hogg, Falcone, and Warner are certainly the key returners.
Coach Jurgens will turn to a talented sophomore class to fill in several pieces of his rotation. Richmond transfer Lamonte Owens Lamonte Owens 6'3" | SF Seton Catholic | 2025 IN headlines that group and should make an instant impact for the Cardinals this winter. He has good size on the wing at 6’3″, can physically take on smaller defenders to score at the basket, and will knock down open outside shots as well. Owens should have a very nice sophomore season. Grant Semler Grant Semler 5'10" | PG Seton Catholic | 2025 IN , Aiden Sanders, and Jason Moynihan Jason Moynihan 6'3" | SF Seton Catholic | 2025 IN are among the other sophomores who could step in and help Seton Catholic this year.
Season Outlook
Seton Catholic will be the favorite to win Sectional 56. The Cardinals feature as good of a one-two punch as you will find in Class 1A with Braiden Hogg Braiden Hogg 6'1" | PG Richmond | 2024 State IN and Mason Harvey. Their skill sets compliment each other very well and both have been major varsity contributors for two seasons now. Expect to see their best basketball yet this winter. A couple of other returning rotation pieces, mixed in with some talented up-and-coming sophomores, will give Coach Jurgens plenty to work with. Class 1A is pretty wide open this season with a few of the best teams moving up in classifications. Look for the Cardinals to be an under-the-radar contender.
