After a slow start and some foul trouble in the first half, Mekhi came back and dominated in the second. The shifty senior was finding success getting to his spots in the mid-range, and the pull-up jumper was falling at a high percentage. Has good footwork to pull-up with his feet squared to the basket allowing him to hit his shots consistently. Mekhi also picked up assists in a number of ways. He could dish off a last second pass in transition, get in the lane and kick it out to an open shooter, and he also had the vision to launch deep passes up the floor to catch the defense sleeping. Helped lead Golda Meir to a win over Audubon Tech.

Jaylen Woodland
Jaylen Woodland
Although his team couldn’t come away with the win, Jaylen had a monster performance against Golda Meir. Woodland put up an impressive 48 points on 13-24 shooting from the field, and it was because he found success getting to the foul line. He’s a fearless driver on the offensive end, attacking the paint, not shying away from contact, and having the body control to maintain his balance for some tough finishes. Woodland knocked down four 3’s with his quick release from beyond the arc, and was even fouled on two of those makes. In transition he’s lightning quick pushing the ball up the floor, and with his 6 steals he was able to get a lot of easy points off his defensive efforts alone. Would like to see him cut back on some of the turnovers, but nonetheless it was a big time performance from the senior.
If it was Mekhi Wesley Mekhi Wesley 6’1″ | CG Milwaukee Golda Meir | 2023 State WI who dominated the second half, it was Jordan Jones Jordan Jones 6’4″ | CG Golda Meir | 2023 WI who owned the first half. The 2023 wing offers plenty of length at 6’4 with the ability to score in a number of ways. He does a great job of playing off two feet around the rim to stay under control, and he also flashed a nice pull-up jumper from 10-12 feet. With his high release point and long arms his shot is tough to contest when he gets into that little bit of space. Defensively he showed he can guard a number of spots, and in the full-court press he was a problem, using his length to tip passes and help force turnovers.

Turon Rivers
Turon Rivers
Turon is an absolute force in the paint, and after scoring 6.8 ppg as a junior I think he’s realizing how dominant he can be at the high school level. Turon has the ability to garner deep post position and just bully defenders around the rim, but he also has the ability to step out a bit, face up, and hit the mid-range jumper. Rivers is also light on his feet at his size, and was able to beat his man off the dribble on multiple occasions to get to the rim. On the defensive end he’s not going to give up an inch of space on the block, and he’s also a good rim protector with excellent timing off the floor. Finished with 3 blocks and 2 steals on that end of the floor to go along with his 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Damon Landrum Jr
Damon Landrum Jr
I really liked the effort that Damon brought to the floor defensively last night. His constant pressure on the ball combined with active help-side defense helped hold Tremper to 4 points through the first ten minutes of play. Damon has quick hands and good instincts on when to take his chances to pick up steals. Even when his team wasn’t able to secure possessions, Damon’s ability to force loose balls and then get on the floor brought a ton of energy and momentum to his team. His effort seemed to be contagious and kept his team going as they picked up an opening night win.
Kon had one of the most effortless scoring performances I’ve seen last night, pouring in 37 points on 15-19 shooting from the field. His buckets came in a variety of ways, as he could beat his man off the dribble from the top of the key, post up against smaller guards, knock down threes, or putback his teammates’ misses inside. Now listed at 6’6 he has size on the wing that makes him such a difficult mismatch. He’s too skilled for bigger wings to defend, yet too good in the paint to stick a quicker guard on him. Showed his toughness inside with 19 rebounds and was also a very willing passer who was constantly looking to pass the ball ahead in transition.

Solomon wasn’t going to go down without a fight against Wisconsin Lutheran. The senior point guard is a known facilitator who can find open teammates all over the floor. Both in the half-court and transition Solomon has excellent vision to zip in passes to his teammates around the rim. Finishing with 18 points Garrison was able to get out in transition, get downhill off of screens, and also made defenders pay for going under screens as he hit a couple of deep jumpers.
