Analysis: It wasn’t too hard to come up with a top five. Oregon signee Shelstad was a given as the returning 6A player of the year and considering new teammate Mosley was PIL Player of the Year and First Team All-State last season, he was an easy choice. It’s not often that two guys from the same team both make the first team but this year it’s definitely one of those cases. With Mosley going to the Three Rivers League, Seely-Roberts appears to be the heir apparent to the PIL Player of the Year award and that cements him as a First Team All-State choice. Pippa-White made our First Team All-State honors two years ago as a sophomore and as our projected Mt Hood Conference POY, it earns him a return to the list. As our pick for Metro League Player of the Year, Childs earns the fifth nod on First Team for 2022-23.
The second team is where some of the state’s young talent shows up, including a couple of sophomores in Howell and Grady. Howell is our pick for Southern Oregon Conference Player of the Year. The TRL and PIL are arguably the two top conferences in 6A so you’d expect them to have multiple selections. In addition to Grady we see Lake grab a nod from the TRL, and out of Portland, Morris is our pick. Sucher should win the Pacific Conference Player of the Year honors and we see that putting him over the top of other candidates.
For Player of the Year, who else but Shelstad? Probably one of the easier choices for a pre-season pick in quite some time. With a repeat win, the only thing he really needs to do now to cement his legacy is winning a state title and you bet that’s his goal this season.
