The high school football season has passed the mid-way point and basketball Fall Leagues continue to move forward throughout the Pittsburgh region. With an abundance of Fall Leagues scattered in a variety of locations and hundreds of players participating in the competition, the rest of this month will make for a hectic time on the field/court.
Even though many student-athletes that participate in WPIAL-sanctioned fall sports/activities are not able to play for their teams in a fall basketball league, the games on the hardwood are still intense. High school coaches are drawing up situational plays, changing defenses, utilizing bench personnel, and substituting players to work hard at achieving a victory. Also, officials are taking it seriously, college coaches are in attendance, and booster programs are working on fundraising.
The longest reigning Fall Basketball League is organized by the Pittsburgh Basketball Club based out of the Montour area, with other surrounding municipalities holding games as well to supplement the league. Over thousands of players have participated in the last twenty years and some have used this league as a springboard themselves to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level. Another Fall Basketball League that has risen to the occasion in recent years comes from the Caveman AAU Basketball Organization. These games are located mostly at North Allegheny High School and a few other local venues. Not to mention a variety of other Fall Leagues “running games” in the city of Pittsburgh and surrounding gymnasiums.
