These six players have either been mainstays in my purview all summer, or did enough at the expo to make me a believer. These guys should have some fast-rising stocks and are in a groove as the high school season looms closer.
One of the most pleasantly surprising and consistent players of the summer, Ibarra continued to impress at the expo, dictating play and racking up buckets while playing largely mistake-free ball. He’s got an excellent feel with the ball in his hands, pounding the rock and creating off the bounce. He likes to work to the middle, get into the heart of the defense and can hit right at the rim or pull up for a little fader in the paint. He was operating with ease at the expo and really one of the more dominant players of the event.
Highlights
This guy is a long, athletic guard who can be a big factor on the boards, setting the tone for his team with second-chance points. He looks like he’s improved on his three-point shot over the summer as he got in a bit of a rhythm at the expo, making the long-range darts look easy. Williams is a big effort player that will contribute across the board.
Highlights
Olson was super-aggressive taking the ball to the rack and cleaning up inside. He’s a strong finisher that hits on the move from just about every angle. He was forcing the issue at the expo, making defenders step up to challenge his drives each time down. He’s a really fluid player with a nice handle that makes it tough to shut down his drives, even when defenders prepare for it.
The Ferris guard has grown his game so much over the summer. He continues to improve and build on his all-around game and has proven he can handle a variety of responsibilities. He can handle the ball and set up his teammates, stroke the three, and create looks off the dribble, but most importantly he continues to show a distinct ability to lead. Skaife is a big-time player lurking and ready to blow. He’s going to be a major issue in the Greater Spokane League this winter.
Smith is a long option at guard that plays a controlled attacking game, getting to the hoop and finishing strong. Every move he makes is strong and intentional, he’s a fighter on the glass and can even hit the three at a decent rate. He will be a big part of the Borderites push to the state tournament this season.
Hurst has some sneaky size for a guard and possesses a good balance of strength and quickness. This led to Hurst getting to the rim well, making decisive moves, and showing off some shifty finishes under pressure. He was really smooth in splitting the defense and was a great playmaker for his team. Another plus, Hurst had good touch at the line and was overall a solid performer at the expo.
