With the 2022-23 TSSAA boys’ high school basketball season around the corner, here are 4 things to know about the Wildcats.
Damarien Yates Damarien Yates 6'8" | SF Fayette Ware | 2023 State TN should be a matchup problem in 3A
The 6-foot-8 senior wing is coming off a junior season averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals, and this production came playing alongside big man JaSteven Walker, who led the team in scoring (17.7) and rebounding (13.1). Now, it’s Yates turn to lead a Fayette Ware squad that’s looking to make a second-consecutive trip to Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Yates should be a matchup problem in 3A this upcoming season because of his versatility. Most nights, he’s going to be the biggest and probably best player on the floor. Yates should look to post up on the block to get easy scores. Whenever there’s a bigger, slower defender on him, Yates is quick enough to take the defender off the dribble. He has the ability to make shots from the perimeter. This should be another season where Yates averages a double-double.
Tacarien Freeman Tacarien Freeman 5'10" | PG Fayette Ware | 2025 State TN should make a name for himself
The sophomore point guard plays hard on every possession. Freeman is very good at making the right pass. He can also make shots from the perimeter. But, Freeman loves to sit down on defense. He always look forward to guarding the other team’s best guard. Freeman doesn’t shy away from competition. I’m not expecting his numbers to look similar to Yates, but I am expecting a 2022 season where Freeman will display his competitiveness and ability to run a team.
Eric Jones is Fayette Ware’s best knockdown shooter
The 5-11 junior guard has the respect of his teammates. Each time he touched the basketball in Tuesday’s open gym session, Jones was face guarded. But, when he was able to get open, Jones made shots from deep. He has a nice shot release and shoots every shot like it’s going to fall. Jones will help provide spacing on the floor with Freeman, Yates, Jairus Terry Jr., and Jeremiah Hayes.
Fayette Ware has two other promising sophomores
Combo guard Taveion Beckom and small forward Tarecous Stevens will provide production for the Wildcats. Beckom will provide scoring on the perimeter and defensive energy off the bench. The sophomore plays with a high motor on every possession. Stevens is a 6-5 wing that also plays with a high motor, especially on the defensive end. He blocked a lot of shots at the rim on Tuesday and contested shots as well.
Stevens is still a year or two away from being a force on the offensive end, but he’s heading in the right direction, mainly because of his attitude to want to improve.
