Continue ReadingOver the month of August, I traveled and took in some actions from a few different elite camps and as usual here at Prep Hoops, we like to reflect back on the month that was and compile lists of prospects who made impressions on us. For this article, I’ll focus on the point guard that stood out.
Tahaad Pettiford Tahaad Pettiford 6'1" | PG Hudson Catholic | 2024 State #27 Nation NJ | 5’11 | Hudson Catholic ’24
Pettiford didn’t take long to show his knack for controlling the pace of a game. He’s a quick, shifty and creative 5-foot-11 guard that brings plenty of moments for the photographers and videographers sitting on the baseline to gather content with his array of no-look dimes, fancy finishes around the rim with either hand or quick crossovers that leave his defender guessing. He was an overall standout at the Pro Insight Combine and backed his top-50 ranking nationally in the 2024 class.
Daquan Davis Daquan Davis 6'1" | PG Overtime Elite (GA) | 2024 #119 Nation GA | 6’0 | St. John’s (DC) ’24
It’s becoming routine for Davis to pretty much take over in any event he plays in. He’s always had the hardhat approach to the game that translates with his relentless effort on the defensive end, but over the last two years Davis has polished and added much to his offensive repertoire that has contributed to him being an all-around impact player. Davis was burying three’s on the regular, pushing pace in transition for scores and rebounding at a high rate for his position throughout Will Barton Elite Camp.
Jameel Morris Jameel Morris 6'1" | PG Trenton Catholic | 2023 NY | 6’1 | Our Savior Lutheran ’23
Morris caught my eye from the opening tip of the first game at the Pro Insight Combine with how dialed in he was defensively. He was harassing his matchup the full length of the floor every possession and early on it resulted in a few deflections for transition scores. As the game settled in, Morris started operating well in ball-screens at the top of the key and did a nice job of making reads as a playmaker or making the opposing big pay for sagging off too much by rising up and converting on three’s. He’s an athletic guard with a tremendous build and frame that should translate seamlessly into college.
Jacoi Hutchinson Jacoi Hutchinson 6'3" | CG IMG | 2023 State #101 Nation FL | 6’1 | IMG Academy ’23
I was extremely pleased to see Hutchinson continue his high-level of play into August. After being a main contributor to Team Takeover’s run to the 17U EYBL Peach Jam title game, Hutchinson’s way of scoring and facilitating was in such a smooth and mature fashion. He made his man pay on touches in the mid-post where he’d face up and either get to his spots off of 1-to-2 dribbles or hit big time fadeaways towards the baseline. He showed great patience in ball-screens and took advantage of any open looks off the catch.
Vasean Allete | 6’0 | United Scholastics Academy ’23
Allete’s game is similar to Pettiford’s in that he’s always going to give the crowd a show. The 6-foot native of Canada is one of the more explosive scorers I’ve seen this summer due to his ability to create space and counter with quick twitch movement. He can be operating in an isolation on the perimeter and in the blink of an eye, end up at the rim for a lay-up. He has a tendency of getting his defender on a move, stepping back and settling for some tougher looks from deep, but showed plenty of confidence in letting it go. He’s a blur in the open floor and has ability to finish in a variety of ways with either hand.
Tyrin Bizzelle Tyrin Bizzelle 6'2" | PG Calvert Hall College | 2024 State MD | 6’0 | Calvert Hall ’24
Bizzelle is someone that I’ve covered heavily over the summer though the EBA Summer League and in various events that he’s participated in. His performance in every setting indicates a big junior season is a head for the southpaw floor general. He’s a capable shot-maker from three both off the catch or off the dribble, finishes high lay-ups with soft touch on drives to the rim and processes the game at a high-level as a playmaker for others. He still remains under the radar and would be a name that I would make time to see if I was a college assistant coach early this winter.
