Scheduled for September 17th in Des Moines, the Expo provides the opportunity for players to come out and compete against some of the best players in the state as well as another opportunity to be seen by our scouts. In this article, we take a look at 10 of the top guards from the Class of 2023 who have registered so far.
A 6-0 guard who is coming off a really good junior year in which he averaged 18.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists a game. He’s at his best when he’s playing downhill and attacking the rim, using his quick first step to get by defenders for finishes.
Britson grabbed our attention at this event last year, performing at a high level as both a scorer and distributor. He continued that strong play into his junior year, leading the Cardinals in scoring (16.1) and assists (3.5). He’s a compact but physical three-level scorer who sees the floor well.
Highlights
Carson is a dynamic 6-3 playmaking guard who can get to the bucket and finish through contact. He has a good feel for the game and passes it well. An athletic combo guard with good size and length, he can provide some versatility on both ends of the floor.
A 6-2 guard who can score from all three levels, Bauer shot over 36% from behind the arc as a junior. His ability to shoot both off the dribble and the catch makes him a dangerous offensive weapon.
A true pass-first guard who thrives in the up-tempo system that Dunkerton likes to play, Gardner led the state in assists last year, dishing out 232 helpers. He has excellent court vision and loves to push the pace. He’s a good pick-and-roll guard who can turn the corner and get to the bucket, pull up for a jumper, or find the roll man with a nice pocket pass.
Highlights
Kiburis does a little bit of everything, stuffing the stat sheet for the Rebels as a junior to the tune of 21.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 3.2 steals a game. He has good size and does an excellent job playing with pace.
A 6-1 off-ball guard who had a huge year as a shooter for Waukee Northwest, Manning buried 38.2% of his 3-point attempts as a junior. He has a quick release and moves really well without the ball in his hands.
A well-built 6-2 lefty guard, Mauro is capable of scoring from all three levels or making plays for his teammates. He has a quick release off the catch and good court vision when he’s handling it. He had a strong performance at this event last year as well.
Highlights
Naylor enjoyed a breakout junior year for the Norsemen, helping lead them to the 2A state tournament. He led the team in scoring at 17.1 points a game, showing the ability to create his own shot as well as find spaces in the defense to score off the ball. He shot nearly 40% from the arc and can put the ball on the floor to get to the rim. He’s a strong all-around scorer.
Chiodo emerged in the second half of the year as a solid scoring spark off the bench for the Thunder, knocking down 41.2% of his 3-point attempts while showing a lightning-quick release off the catch. Following the graduations of Manny Hammonds and Josh Baucum, a lot of shots have opened up this coming winter and Chiodo looks like a prime candidate to take a good chunk of them.
