Shields has yet to get a big role on the varsity at Derby, but he’s just too good in summer action to not recognize here. He is quick and explosive, and speeds up opposing guards. He is a talented ball handler and playmaker who can distribute from the point or be an option off the ball. He is always on the attack and generates pace that sets up his teammates.
Highlights
An explosive offensive threat, Boatwright has a soft touch and is ready to fire from deep. He distributes the ball around the perimeter, waiting for an opening to take the three. But he’s not just a shooter. This point guard makes a surprising number of plays in the paint and on the glass, and once the ball is in his hands he pushes it hard up the court to create up-tempo opportunities. He’s a slick ball handler who is physically tough, getting to the hoop and scoring through contact.
After teaming with several talented guards the last couple of years, Butler-Lawson (pictured) will have his chance to be ‘the guy’ at Junction City this year. Though he hasn’t produced big stats in high school yet, it’s not hard to see what he can do running with SSA. He’s got a size/quickness combination that is hard for opponents to match. His eyes are up when he’s running the point, which will help a new cast of teammates adapt to the varsity game.
On a team loaded with talented guards, Doss excelled last season, putting up 11 points per game. He’ll probably take on more of a leader/distributor role next year. But this summer he showed off some impressive ability to score from the point. He gets to open shots and finishes with creativity. He’s pesky at the defensive end and is quick to turn defense into offense.
Highlights
An honorable-mention 3A pick last year, Lauer impresses on the summer circuit for his toughness and versatility in the backcourt. He’s consistently good from the perimeter when given a sliver of daylight. He battles in every phase of the game, using his physicality to his advantage. His size and strength allow him to make plays on the glass, in the paint, and to overwhelm small guards.
