Prep Hoops had all 4 courts rocking with talent and quite a few D2/NAIA coaches on hand to catch a glimpse of some of Florida’s hidden gems. After a day full of basketball here are the 5 players I watched that I felt stood out above the crowd.
6’4 Chris Cornish Guard
Cornish continues to make a statement and show why he’s one of Florida’s top emerging prospects and premier slashers. He was easily the best looking player I saw all weekend. After two 30 point outings it was clear no one could guard the shifty 6’4 Guard. The whispers in the gym are that his game lacks a jump shot, he quickly silenced that hitting 5 mid range pull ups and a pair of corner 3s in one game. I cant attest to Cornish’s work ethic on his jump shot first hand, and yesterday was an example of hard work and dedication to ones craft.
5’7 Ta’Veon Jones Ta’Veon Jones 5'7" | PG Windermere | 2024 State FL Point Guard
This is the first time I’ve seen Jones play in person, as with most my eyes quickly drew to the players smaller stature. Ta’Veon plays much larger than he is, and quickly reminded me of a young Chris Lykes. This guard is fast, he blew by every defender making plays for his teammates, finishing at the basket, and hitting his open 3s. He does everything you want and will most certainly display his talents at the next level.
6’5 Jeremiah Police Guard
Police is an absolute offensive threat. He carried his team through all 3 of their wins doing the large majority of the scoring. A true 3 level scorer in every sense of the term. Shot the 3-ball well both off the catch and dribble. Jeremiah finished strong around the rim and handles the ball well. He’s one I will be watching closely this season.
6’9 AJ Pierce-Jerome Center/PF
This being the third time watching Jerome play this summer it seems like he’s really made playing at the next level his goal. It’s not a surprise with his size and wingspan that he was the most active rebounder and rim protector at the event. He displayed nice touch around the basket and scoring inside the paint even over 6’7 defenders. AJ boasts a very physical, college ready frame.
6’6 Camerin James Camerin James 6'6" Leesburg high | 2023 FL Wing
The hyper-athletic wing showed his ability to get to the rim and finish with authority, shredding through physical contact. Even when help defense collapsed he was still finding ways to finish. James showed flashes of next level ball handling in transition using a quick cross over to get past people trying to stop him from pushing the pace of the game. James is a phenomenal downhill player.
