This summer brought to our attention a whole lot of the small school ballers that everyone should know about. Here’s a look at some of the guards from the small schools who we will be watching closely this winter:
Ace Martinez
Ace Martinez
This is no new kid on the block. Martinez has been impressing Prep Hoops scouts for a few years. He’s a blur with the ball and a pest on defense. He’s quick and shifty, able to blow by defenders and to create his own shot in the half court set. He’s a lefty who finishes in traffic and gets a ton of buckets in transition. He’s athletic and crafty – a senior to pay attention to.
Aden Mericle

The ballers at CHIEF don’t get seen a lot, but they hold their own when they show up at non-school venues. Mericle has played a ton over the years for CHIEF and he’s finally a senior. He averaged 18 points and 6 boards as a junior. He’s a springy guard who can play around the goal and does a lot of things well.
Sam Moore
Sam Moore
1A powerhouse South Gray has a lot of holes to fill. They lose a couple of all-state guards, so the door is open to up-and-comers like Moore. This guy impressed this summer with his scrappiness and intensity on defense. He harasses opposing guards every step of the way. On offense, he’s got a nice handle and plays with speed and aggressiveness. He can drop the 3-pointer and is a scorer in transition.
One player can’t win a state title all by himself. Jaxson Brandl was unbelievable down the stretch last year, but he needed a good collection of talent around him to win the 1A Div. II title last year. Sherer is a team leader who really locks down on defense. He’s quick and pesky and smart. He is an effective shooter who draws the defense away from the Jackrabbits’ other scorers.

Gunner Wilson

An important piece of the state team from a year ago, Wilson will step into a leading role this year. He’s a glue guy willing to do whatever it takes to win. He’s especially important at the defensive end and on the glass from the guard spot.
