Focusing solely on the 5-on-5 play, there were prospects that used the stage to their advantage to rise above the rest. There weren’t many 2023 prospect in attendance, but these are three who stood out:
Jameel Morris Jameel Morris 6'1" | PG Trenton Catholic | 2023 NY | 6’2 | Our Savior Lutheran
From the opening tip of the opening game, Morris caught my eye due to his approach at the defensive end. A lot of times when events like this take place, guys are energetic for the first 5-10 minutes and slowly veer back to who they really are. I learned a lot about Morris in the first 30-minute game that took place. He’s a tenacious defender who doesn’t allow the opposing ball-handler an easy trip up court. A few times he poked the ball free, corralled it and finished at the other end only to pull his shorts up and get ready to defend on the ensuing possession. He was a downhill threat in any transition situation, showed valuable patience in making reads coming off ball screens and made the opposing bigs pay for sagging off when he was on the perimeter. Morris’ recruitment is wide open and should be one that LM and MM programs monitor.
Austin Ball Austin Ball 6'7" | SF Miller School | 2023 State #203 Nation VA | 6’7 | Miller School of Albemarle
It’s always interesting to see Ball show up in these sort of setting when others may not be in-tune with who he is, but it only take one time as he did on Sunday where he used his quick burst to get baseline from the right corner and throw down a left-handed dunk for folks to show him respect. After his defender started showing him respect as a driver, he buried consecutive three’s to make everyone aware that it’d be a long day. He’s a fluid athlete who operates smoothly with the ball and comes with the versatility to fill a couple of positions on the court, possibly even the stretch four at times.
Trey Boyd Trey Boyd 6'4" | CG South Kent | 2023 State New E | 6’4 | South Kent
Boyd was one of the top pure shooters in attendance and while he hit is share of triples, he was more effective in getting to the mid-range or sprinting the lanes in transition for scores. Boyd has good positional size at 6-foot-4 and a frame that should fill out at the next level. He finished nicely through contact and showed instinct as an off-ball mover especially when he would cut baseline and catch his defender sleeping. Boyd holds an offer from NJIT.
