I was only able to attend the first day of the camp but still saw a ton of of great action. Former NCAA Nation Champion Kyle Guy is currently doing a ton of great things as far as basketball in the state and this camp is easily one of them as it should be a great event moving forward. With that said, here are some of my takeaways from what I saw.
Team Stations Standouts:
Jake Davis Jake Davis 6'6" | SF Cathedral | 2023 State IN – 6’6 SF – Cathedral: The big sized wing looked really sharp here in the drills and would arguably say that he was the best pure shooter I saw this day. Any chance he got to shoot the outside jumper in a station he knocked them down at a consistent rate. Even saw him get up and dunk as well which is a rarity. Still believe he is one of the more under recruited 2023s out there.
Cade Brenner Cade Brenner 6'3" | SG NorthWood | 2023 State IN – 6’3 SG – NorthWood: Brenner was one of the guards that stood out here to me. Have not watched a ton of his games in the past but his size and physical play was hard not to like. For his position, he has a ton of strength and was by far the strongest guard in the group. Good shot blocking ability as well. Caught the coach’s attention that were in attendance as well as mine.
JaQualon Roberts JaQualon Roberts 6'8" | PF Bloomington North | 2023 State IN – 6’7 PF – Bloomington North (Vanderbilt): Roberts came into this camp as one of the top players in the state and played like it as well. No matter what the camp attendees were doing, Roberts did it with 120% effort and energy. His outside shot was very consistent in these drills and he was showcasing a dunk fest throughout. His baseline work here was also flawless. Kyle Guy himself said that Roberts’ ceiling is unlimited.
Jacob Cherry Jacob Cherry 6'9" | C Eastern-Pekin | 2023 State IN – 6’10 C – Eastern: The long and lanky post was one of the bigs that instantly caught my attention on this day. Super athletic player for his size, runs the floor well, smooth, recovers and finished well also. The big man really went at each other in the drills and Cherry did a great job in all of them.
Gavin Wisley Gavin Wisley 6'8" | PF Bloomington South | 2023 State IN – 6’9 PF – Bloomington South: Wisley is another long and lanky big that does not play like a traditional post as he is more of a guy that will bring his defender out and stretch the floor. Hits the outside jumper extremely well while still being overall pretty solid in the paint. He also has some lowkey quickness to him as well. By far was the best shooter out of all the bigs.
Nick Richart Nick Richart 6'9" | PF Zionsville | 2023 State IN – 6’9 PF – Zionsville: Richart could make a case as the overall best big that attended this camp. Was just so fundamentally sound and did almost everything correctly the first time that the coaches were teaching. Was a little more phyical than what I have seen from him in the past and he finished well through contact. Stretched the floor a little bit as well. Hard to find a smarter post in the state than Richart.
Nickens Lemba Nickens Lemba 6'6" | PF Southport | 2023 State IN – 6’6 PF – Southport: As far a per athletic ability, Nickens was by far in the top tier. Defense was excellent as always but it was his offense that looked a little bit more improved here. Had a couple of good moves that involved ball handling and a really sharp shot fake. He was put in multiple different groups where he could work on different things with different positions at once.
Sheridan Sharp Sheridan Sharp 6'2" | PG Ben Davis | 2023 State IN – 6’1 PG – Ben Davis: Sharp was one of the more skilled and quick guards during the stations. As far as playing on the ball, Sharp was the quickest and he made so many shifty moves off the dribble. Shot the ball from deep very well. Guard to watch out for this upcoming season. Breakout year potential right here.
1v1 Positions Standouts:
Zane Doughty Zane Doughty 6'8" | C Ben Davis | 2023 State IN – 6’9 C – Ben Davis: (Valparasio): When it came to 1v1 drills, Doughty really excelled here. Was just so aggressive in the paint on both ends and it was almost like he was welcoming the hard contact. I lost count of how many And1s he had but there were ton both in this drill and in the scrimmages. The improvement to where Doughty was his freshman year to this year is amazing to watch.
Cooper Farrall Cooper Farrall 6'5" | SF Culver Academy | 2023 State IN – 6’6 SF – Culver Academy: Farrall was one of the best wings during the 1v1 drills. Whether it was taking his defender to the outside or inside, Farrall scored at bunch and went on multiple consecutive runs on the offense. 3-point shot was falling and he was creating well off the dribble and showing that he is much more than a catch and shoot player.
Logan Imes Logan Imes 6'4" | PG Zionsville | 2023 State #202 Nation IN – 6’4 PG – Zionville (Penn State): The Penn State commit was the leader as far as talent when it came to the guard group. Was just so creative on the ball in this drill and in the scrimmage and once he got to the rim he was finishing. Showed off how smart of a lead guard he is.
Kamari Jones Kamari Jones 6'4" | SG Lawrence Centra (IN) / Hilcrest Prep (AZ) | 2023 IN – 6’4 SG – Lawrence Central: Incase you have not see Jones play, just know that this guy is just a flat out baller. Scored at all three levels well and had tremendous bounce in anything he was doing. Defense was lockdown and was just so smooth off the catch from deep. Kyle Guy said some great things about Jones and we both agreed we think he is D1 material.
Jermaine Coleman Jermaine Coleman 6'7" | SF Park Tudor | 2023 State IN – 6’7 SF – Park Tudor: Colman was another player that Kyle Guy said that his ceiling was unlimited. He was very active here on the offense his pull up jumper from 15ft was money. In my eyes, he has been one of the more improved players this entire summer and his potential is through the roof.
Other Quick Standouts:
Dylan Moles Dylan Moles 6'3" | PG Greenfield-Central | 2023 State IN – 6’3 PG – Greenfield Central (Marian): When it come to IQ, Moles was one of the top guards both on and off the ball here. Can score the ball at a high level also.
Preston Roberts Preston Roberts 6'5" | SF Noblesville | 2023 State IN – 6’5 SF – Noblesville: Roberts is still on my list as underrated players in the 2023 class. Made some great passes from the wing and was scoring at a solid rate.
David Meriwether David Meriwether 6'10" | C Lawrence North | 2023 UT – 6’10 C – Lawrence North: Meriwether just provides a massive amount of size in the post. As far as rim protecting, he could have been the best.
Joey Hart Joey Hart 6'5" | SG Linton-Stockton | 2023 State #214 Nation IN – 6’4 SG – Linton-Stockton (UCF): The recent UCF commit shot the ball at a high level like you would think he would. Used his underrated athletic ability to make plays
Anthony Ball Anthony Ball 6'6" | PF Decatur Central | 2023 State IN – 6’6 PF – Crispus Attucks: Hard to say there was more aggressive PF in this camp. Was extremely physical and worked the baseline at a high level.
Ahmere Carson Ahmere Carson 6'2" | PG Anderson | 2023 State IN – 6’2 PG – Anderson: When it came to the 5v5 action, Carson was the MVP and it was not even close. In the scrimmage I watched of his, I kid you not he had about 10 threes. Dude was on fire from behind the arc.
Gavin Welch Gavin Welch 6'6" | SF New Castle | 2023 State IN – 6’5 SG – New Castle: Welch was a little overlooked here I thought. Was great as a spot up shooter and even showed off some sneaky athletic ability on a fast break slam. Coaches were impressed by him.
Kamari Slaughter Kamari Slaughter 6'2" | SG Cathedral | 2023 State IN – 6’4 SG – Portage: There was very few players that could match Slaughter’s motor and energy here. Very intense guard that right now is at that combo guard level.
Keyon Miller – 6’0 PG – Southport: Miller may be on the smaller end but man is this lead guard so shifty with the ball. Had some really good floaters and attacked off the dribble very well.
Joseph Annan Joseph Annan 6'7" | PF Pike | 2023 State IN . – 6’6 PF – Pike: Annon Jr. is an undersized PF but plays solid defense and rebounds very well. If he could develop a jumper, that would really boost his game.
