Under Head Coach Tarrik Mabon, Mount Vernon’s program has certainly been headed in the right direction in recent years and this could very well be his most loaded roster from top to bottom. Between AJ Patterson running the point, Williams and Scott controlling the paint, and Shegog providing athleticism on the wing, there aren’t many holes on this team. After watching them play together this summer, it’s obvious that this team is full of mature, high-IQ players that play the right way. However, they will be competing in an extremely tough region 6-A that includes 8 schools that made the playoffs last year.
Roster
2023 6’3 G AJ Patterson
Patterson is a big PG and a true floor general. He changes pace well, plays with a high-IQ, and is crafty when he gets in the paint. Averaged 9 PPG and 7 APG last year.
2023 6’3 G Kenneth Southall Jr.
Southall is a physical, tenacious guard that will often guard the other team’s best player. He plays with a high motor and can guard multiple positions. Offensively, he’s skilled and plays his role in the offense well.
2024 6’6 F Xavier Shegog Xavier Shegog 6'6" | PF Mt. Vernon | 2024 State GA
Shegog comes over from Goodpasture Christian in Nashville and will likely be a high-impact player right off the bat. The 6’6 wing is a gifted athlete that finishes above the rim and runs the floor extremely well. He’s also effective rebounding the ball and playing tough defense. Shegog has received offers from Radford, Western Carolina, and Jacksonville this summer.
2024 6’9 F Dennis Scott III Dennis Scott III 6'8" | PF Mt. Vernon | 2024 State GA
Scott is an extremely talented big man that can hurt you both inside and out. Scott’s shooting stroke is pure and allows him to space the floor. Meanwhile, Scott can punish defenders on the block using a variety of different moves to score. This summer, Scott picked up offers from Indiana, Georgia Tech, Harvard, and a few others.
2023 6’8 C Keith Williams Keith Williams 6'8" | C Mt. Vernon Presbyterian | 2023 State GA
Williams is an absolute workhorse in the paint and wears opposing players down with his physicality and toughness. He anchors the middle for Mount Vernon and has stepped into a real leadership role. Averaged 13 PPG and 10 RPG last year.
2024 6’4 G Sha’Yah Goba
Goba could turn a lot of heads this year. At 6’4, Goba has a well-rounded game and a strong set of hands. He also provides a lot of versatility because he can play mulitple spots along the perimeter.
2025 6’4 G Pace Bottoms
Pace Bottoms should provide a nice spark off the bench for Mount Vernon next year because of his elite shooting ability and toughness on defense. Bottoms has a quick release on his outside shot and can get hot quickly.
