Essex County will have several solid teams this winter who will get more specific focus as the season nears, but today we take a look at some of the top players returning this winter.
Quatrell Wilson Quatrell Wilson 6'5" | SF Newark East Side | 2023 State NJ | 6’6′ | F | Newark East Side 2023
Wilson took on a leadership role as a junior for coaches Anthony Tavares and Bryant Garvin, who had a very young squad. He’s a lean and long player who can get up and down the floor well. He’s also a good ballhandler for a bigger player. He plays hard defense and gets on the boards. As a junior, he had 22 vs West Essex, 15 vs Irvington and 16 vs University. Should be one of the top frontcourt players in Essex County this year and could be a scholarship player with a strong senior year. Once he gets in a college weight room and puts on a few pounds of muscle, he could be a very impactful player at the next level.
Joe Ganton Joe Ganton 6'4" | SG West Essex | 2023 State NJ | 6’4” | G | West Essex 2023
An interesting prospect who has flown under the radar a bit on the AAU scene. He’s an aggressive guard who attacks the basket and can finish through traffic, possesses solid skills as a facilitator and also can score it from deep. He’s a coachable player with a good understanding of the game of basketball. He was over 20pts in 6 of his last 10 and should carry this into his senior year.
Ray Zamloot Ray Zamloot CG Caldwell | 2023 State NJ | 6’1” | G | Caldwell 2023
An all county selection as a junior, Zamloot is a cagey lefty guard who causes defenders problems with his scoring ability. He can finish with both hands around the rim and also step back and make defenders pay from beyond the three point line. He plays tough defense and is unafraid of contact. Caldwell was a solid 24-4 last year and does bring enough back to make noise this year. He had 19 vs East Side, 15 vs SHP and 16 vs Bloomfield. He should repeat as an all-county player and academic D3s will love his GPA.
Rahmire Sanon-Kelly Rahmire Sanon-Kelly 6'1" | SG University | 2024 State NJ | 6’1” | G| Newark University 2024
Unafraid of contact when slashing to the hoop and has crafty footwork going to the rim. He’s a solid ballhandler and facilitator as well. He was steady as a sophomore, dropping 13 on East Side and Central, also chipping in 10 vs Seton Hall Prep. His role will become larger as a junior and colleges should be paying attention to his progress.
Malcolm Bragg Malcolm Bragg 6'3" | SF Newark Tech | 2025 State NJ | 6’0” | G | Newark Tech 2025
Bragg drew eyes as a freshman. He’s a guard who can get it done at multiple levels and a rugged defender who also hits the boards hard. He burst out the gate with a double-double vs West Side and just churned along. He had 24 vs West Side in their second meeting and 22 vs Montclair. Bragg should end up as a scholarship level prospect when it’s all said and done.
Anthony Akande Anthony Akande 6'4" | SG Arts | 2024 State NJ | 6’3” | G | Newark Arts 2024
Explosive summer on the AAU circuit has seen Akande’s stock shoot through the roof. He’s a solid ballhandler who is fierce around the rim and can also step back and keep defenders honest with his range from beyond the arc. Arts has several pieces returning this year and Akande has grown into a D-1 prospect. He had 21 vs Orange and 13 vs Bayonne as top games as a sophomore.
