We got through another high school regular season and summer basketball. Heading into this new upcoming school year, there has been several players that have raised their stock over the past couple of months. This will be part one of a four part stock risers series of articles.
Alexis Dominguez: 5’11 Point Guard “Highland” Class of 2023
Alexis Dominguez has really put the state on notice with his play from the previous nine months. He was the second best player on the Highland 4A State Championship team this past spring. He averaged an impressive 13 points per game last season as Highland’s second leading scorer and the teams leading passer averaging 5 assists per game. Throughout this summer, he’s shown he can be the teams main focal point on the offensive end of the floor going into next season. He will be asked to do more on the offensive side now that star teammate Jose Murillo has graduated. Throughout this summer, Alexis has become one of the state top three-point shooters which will open up his game more this year.
Brandon Lagunas: 5’11 Shooting Guard “West Mesa” Class of 2023
Brandon Lagunas from West Mesa High School really caught my attention this past high school season in January during the Metro Tournament. Since than, I have kept my eyes on Brandon Lagunas for the rest of the season and during this summer. Brandon is one of the most underrated players we have in the state of New Mexico and is only gotten better this summer. He has gotten stronger this summer and you can tell he’s put extra time in his game. Brandon was the teams leading scorer last season and has always been a reliable and consistent perimeter shooter from the outside. This past off-season, you can tell he’s adding getting to the basket and the free throw line in his game. He’s shown confidence and putting his head down and attacking the basket. With West Mesa’s recent transfer acquisitions this summer will only make Brandon more dangerous on the floor.
Cedarius Yates: 6’3 Forward “La Cueva” Class of 2023
This past spring, Cedarius Yates showed the state what kind of player he was. He became one of the states top slashers and elite offensive players inside the paint. He averaged a productive 12 points per game and 5 rebounds per game for the La Cueva Bears last season. They finished 24-4 last season and reached the 5A State Semifinals this past spring. In the off-season, I seen Cedarius Yates at almost every local camp/tournament this summer. He’s remained a solid mid-range scorer as well at creating his own shot off the dribble. With several teammates graduated from this past season and the recent transfer of teammate Exodus Ayers to New Hampshire, Cedarius Yates will more than likely be the teams primary scoring option next season.
Ezra Guest: 5’10 Shooting Guard “Los Lunas” Class of 2023
Ezra Guest from Los Lunas High School has been a player who made a huge impact this past season. He is a player that can play either guard position at a high level. Ezra can run the offense as your teams point guard and can play off the ball with his shooting at the other guard position. He is a player that lets the game come to him and doesn’t take or force bad shots to hurt the flow of the teams offense. Ezra is an efficient scorer that makes a high percentage of his shots. His off-season has been so great that he just committed to Colorado Christian University this past week.
Isaiah Denetclaw: 6’3 Shooting Guard “La Cueva” Class of 2023
Isaiah Denetclaw has been a player known for his three-point shooting and scoring off-the ball, but has added several more key elements to his game. He was La Cueva’s top three-point shooter last season making 45 three point field goals on 41% from behind the line. In the state of New Mexico he was 17th in the state overall in terms of makes, and was 6th in the 5A Class overall. His impact shooting the ball helped La Cueva finish 24-4 last season. This off-season, Isaiah has really taken a leap in putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the rim, this has showed he’s more than just a shooter. He has proven to be a “3 and D” guy that knows how to stay in front of his man on the defensive side of the floor without fouling.
