Continue ReadingThe Mid Ohio Pumas hosted an elite camp at the Westwood Fieldhouse with around 40 prospects, with most of them playing for one of the Pumas 2023 squads. In this article I’ll break down the top performers from the event during the 1V1 and 3V3 drills that proceeded the 5V5 full court action.
Sean Conway, 5’10 PG Bedford 2022: Conway was the 1V1 champ, holding down the winner’s court for multiple sessions in a row. Conway is lightning quick with the ball in his hands and was relentless in getting loose balls. Conway’s quickness is his best trait, as he was able to get around defenders without a rim protector waiting for him in the paint. Conway also made enough jumpers to keep the defense honest.
Bede Lori Bede Lori 6'2" | SG Caldwell | 2023 State OH , 6’3 SG Caldwell 2023: Lori is one of the top small school scorers in the state and showed why he’s so tough to stop from scoring in the 1V1 part of the camp today. Lori has good size at the off-guard position and was able to shoot over smaller defenders. With his soft touch on jumpers, he got friendly rolls on multiple contested shots.
Jordan Edwards Jordan Edwards 6'3" | PG Olentangy Orange | 2023 State OH , 6’2 CG Olentangy Orange 2023: Edwards was one of the top players at the camp, impressing in both the 3V3 and 5V5 portion of the camp. Edwards is quick at getting downhill to the basket and can finish at the basket or stop for 8-12 foot pull-up jumpers or floaters. Edwards also passes the ball at a high level, drawing help defense and finding the open man. The next progression in his game will be starting to knock down the 3-point shot as it could open up even more scoring avenues to his game. That shooting progression could determine if he’s a scholarship level talent.
Gavin Etzler Gavin Etzler 6'2" | CG Crestview | 2023 State OH , 6’1 PG Convoy Crestview 2023: Etzler is the floor general for the Adidas Gold Pumas 2023 squad and showed why he’s a good leader on the court in the 3V3 part of the camp. Etzler helped lead his team to victories on the main court by making smart reads, hitting open shots and competing on defense. This camp was the best I’ve seen Etzler play in the brief times I’ve gotten the chance to watch him. Hoping to see more of this level of play in July for the Pumas.
Carter Pleiman Carter Pleiman 6'4" | SF Botkins | 2023 State OH , 6’5 SF Botkins 2023: Pleiman was another member of the 3V3 squad that was dominant. Pleiman is a strong athlete, competing in track at a high level for Botkins. Pleiman used his physicality to grab rebounds and bully players around the basket. I also got to see Pleiman shoot it from the outside more than he does with his high school team. After running track for most of the spring, Pleiman will get to suit up for the Pumas 2023 gold squad in July, a key acquisition to their team.
Kevin Kirkby Kevin Kirkby 6'5" | PF Dublin Coffman | 2023 State OH , 6’5 PF Dublin Coffman 2023: Kirkby once again impressed me, showing that his performance at Cedar Point during Midwest Live was not a fluke. Kirkby finishes with both hands around the basket and has good size at the forward position. A late bloomer, Kirkby should be picking up recruiting steam from small colleges soon if he continues this level of performance.
