BORDER BATTLE GOES TO PHENOM
In a highly anticipated matchup for the 16U silver division title, Phenom University ran away with an 80-66 win over Howard Pulley. Coaches from all over the Midwest filled the sidelines and baselines with three schools — Minnesota, Iowa State, and Wisconsin — sending three coaches each.
The star who stole the show? Top 100 guard Nick Janowski Nick Janowski 6'3" | SG Pewaukee | 2024 State #126 Nation WI .
The Pewaukee standout dropped 28 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. The game clearly meant something to Janowski as a lot of the top prospects on the floor had similar offer lists and were being prioritized by those schools in attendance. Janowski came out and put his foot the opposition’s throat and never took it off after scoring or assisting on eight of Phenom’s first 12 points.
Janowski finished by going 13-of-23 shooting, mixing in some long range bombs, dribble drives to the rim, and even showcased some post-up ability against smaller guards. Janowski’s dribble pickups and shot fake dribble pickups are elite nationally. He’s clearly extremely refined in that department which sets up a huge chunk of his game offensively.
For Pulley, 2024 forward Isaiah Johnson Isaiah Johnson 6'7" | SF Totino-Grace | 2024 State #135 Nation MN showed some big flashes. The 6-foot-7 combo forward had some mismatches to work with and exploited them. A top five prospect in his class in the state, Johnson had 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He was most effective when he put his head down and dared Phenom to stay between him and the rim.
Phenom also got 16 points and six rebounds from Kon II Knueppel Kon II Knueppel 6'6" | SG Wisconsin Lutheran | 2024 State #15 Nation WI (Wisconsin Lutheran), while Jack Daugherty Jack Daugherty 6'8" | PF Brookfield Central | 2024 State #311 Nation WI (Brookfield Central) tallied 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. More on Daugherty later in the week, but he was outstanding in Kansas City.
TEAM HERRO FALLS SHORT IN FINALE
Not looking great for Team Herro to grab a Peach Jam at large bid after Sunday’s 69-56 loss to Indy Heat.
Herro had three players in double figures, led by Milan Momcilovic Milan Momcilovic 6'8" | SF Pewaukee | 2023 State #44 Nation WI , who had 16 points on 13 shots. John Kinziger John Kinziger 6'0" | CG De Pere | 2023 State #257 Nation WI and Colin Hardrick each added 13 points.
Falling behind 19-4 in the first quarter, Herro dug themselves a big hole and trailed by 23 points going into the fourth quarter.
Herro finished the EYBL regular season with a 7-12 record in a loaded division where eight of 10 teams won at least nine games.
YALDEN, CITY ROCKS BOOK PEACH JAM BID
Appleton native Gus Yalden and City Rocks sealed the deal with a Peach Jam big Saturday night with a thrilling 70-67 win over Pro Skills.
Yalden, a Wisconsin commit, posted 12 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. In Sunday’s finale, Yalden scored 13 points to go along with eight rebounds in a loss to Team Thad. The defeat ended up being meaningless as City Rocks was squarely in the Peach Jam field.
On a balanced City Rocks squad, Yalden finished the EYBL regular season averaging around 14 points per game.
