Last Wednesday the rankings were updated and they will be updated again late in the summer/early fall. Look below for great guards, these players are incoming sophomores from North Dakota.
Top Guards 2025
Sullivan Ihry Sullivan Ihry 5'11" | CG West Fargo Sheyenne | 2025 State ND |5’10 G| West Fargo Sheyenne
He certainly has the ability to be a lead guard. Sheyenne has many holes to fill after graduating a bunch of senior talent. Sully will have the chance to earn himself some varsity playing time this winter. How much burn will he get? Only time will tell. Ihry is a strong guard that will not likely be out-muscled in the EDC. He has the skills, handles, and the passing to be a stud PG in the near future. Ihry has a very nice pull-up game. He can drill J’s from beyond the arc, at 15 feet, and score all the way to the rim. The future looks bright for Mr. Ihry.
Wyatt Westin Wyatt Westin 6'2" | SG Shiloh Christian | 2025 State ND |6’0 SG| Shiloh Christian
He has been very good this spring and summer. Westin has shown the ability to put up big points against high-quality competition in June. I only had to watch him shoot twice to know that this kid is a hot-shot shooter. His pull-up jumper is ultra-smooth and always on. His mid-range is deadly and his shooting range goes out well beyond the arc. I am predicting that he is a starting shooting guard for Shiloh this coming season and he is a super-effective player in his sophomore season. The Skyhawks are going to be scary.
Jake Starcevic Jake Starcevic 6'2" | SF Kindred | 2025 State ND |6’2 SG/SF| Thompson
This Tommie is a premier athlete that will likely have the option to play multiple sports at the next level. This past season, Jake was dunking in varsity games, which does not happen very often in North Dakota for freshmen. On defense, he can guard all 5 positions and he plays with a hard-nosed attitude. I watched Thompson play a few times last season and he was easily one of the top players on the court as a 9th grader. Starcevic is a strong and acrobatic finisher at the rim and an aggressive rebounder. He also sees the floor well and shares the ball. I was impressed with his passing last season. Thompson will be a tough team in Region 2 this upcoming year and Starcevic will be one of the main men that everyone will need to prepare for.
Jenner Smude Jenner Smude 6'4" | SG Century | 2025 State ND |6’4 SG| Bismarck
He is a big wing that shoots it well from the outside. Jenner has the size and shooting stroke to make him an intriguing prospect. He plays AAU ball with ND Phenom, so he is surrounded by excellent talent and he plays against top-notch competition. Smude can get his shot off in the blink of an eye and his high release allows him to shoot over smaller defenders. I like his mechanics and the fact that Jenner is always ready to shoot. Keep tabs on Smude. You do not want to miss a long wing that can stroke the deep ball.
Zacharia Nhial Zacharia Nhial 6'3" | SG West Fargo Sheyenne | 2025 ND |6’1 SG| West Fargo Sheyenne
He is intriguing, to say the least. This past season, his older brother Michael was a DUDE for the Mustangs who was up for Mr. Baskeball and has committed to Northern State for hoops. Zach’s first step is explosive and dangerous. When I have watched, he is very effective in transition and he scores at the rim. He is also a serious shooting threat from beyond the arc. He is already a player to keep tabs on. If he continues to improve and is a late bloomer like his older brother, LOOK OUT!
TJ Brownotter TJ Brownotter 6'0" | SG Mandan | 2025 State ND |5’10 SG| Mandan
He is a quick player with plenty of potential. TJ is cerebral, smart, and clever on the court. He has a solid all-around player that can do a bit of everything. TJ shoots it with proper form and fluidity. He will knock down shots off the dribble and the bounce. If the defense closes out too hard, TJ will attack off the bounce and make plays. He is definitely a player to keep track of. I am excited to see how the season goes for Mandan and TJ.
Kaiden Helm Kaiden Helm 6'3" | SG Minot | 2025 State ND |6’2 CG| Minot
He was a standout player at the NHR State Tournament. Helm is a big guard with size and impressive skills. I liked his physicality and how he was always attacking. Kaiden can put up points from every level. His shooting stroke from beyond the arc was true to the mark. He also scores from mid-range and in the paint. Helm will also finish through contact at the rim. Kaiden is capable of making big buckets near the end of the game clock and when his team needs a basket. Minot High is a loaded program and it looks like Helm will fit right in. It will be fun to see what his future holds with the Magicians and Mr. Helm.
Noah Meissner Noah Meissner 6'1" | CG Jamestown | 2025 State ND |5’11 SG| Jamestown
This Blue Jay is a good athlete that is mature for his 2025 Class. For an incoming sophomore, Noah is physically advanced. He is a versatile offensive threat that can slash for buckets. He has the ability to knock down perimeter jumpers. Noah is also a hard worker on the defensive side of the ball. Meissner’s skill and athleticism should earn him plenty of playing time on the Jamestown varsity squad this next season.
Alex Blume Alex Blume 6'1" | CG Williston | 2025 MN |6’0 G| Williston
He has played very well this spring with 3ND Hoops Fam in AAU ball. Blume impressed multiple scouts on the Prep Hoops Circuit this spring. When I watched Alex at the NHR State Tournament, he stood out to me as a playmaking offensive threat and a good-sized defender that anticipates well. He has a talented bag of tricks that he uses to beat his on-ball defender. Alex gets into the paint and either scores or sets up teammates for good looks. Blume’s finishing is solid, he put in multiple AND1s when I was watching. Alex made a very good first impression this spring.
Brady Westphal Brady Westphal 6'2" | SG West Fargo Horace | 2025 State ND |6’0 SG| West Fargo Horace
The Hawks will be playing a varsity schedule for the first time in school history and Westphal will likely be in the starting lineup. He is a player that can impact the game from beyond the arc. I have seen him shoot it hot from deep and I have heard reports about Westphal shooting it well this spring. Brady is a great communicator that knows his way around the court. He is also solid with the ball in his hands. I am expecting that Horace will need Westphal to handle some of the ballhandling duties this winter as most teams in the EDC will turn up the pressure on the young Hawks. Westphal has been known to make plays in a timely manner and to do the little things that help his team. Get ready to see Brady in the EDC this winter, it is going to be a fun year for Westphal and the Horace Hawks.
Isaac Beauchamp Isaac Beauchamp 6'1" | PG Shanley | 2025 State ND |5’10 PG| Shanley
He was impressive at multiple events this spring on the Prep Hoops Circuit. Beauchamp stood out as a productive scorer. At the 15U level, he was one of the most entertaining players to watch. He is not overly big but he plays with confidence and he does not back down from bigger players. He shoots it very well off the dribble from 15-feet out to college range. Beauchamp does not need much room to get his quick and smooth jumper off. He is also good at getting to the rim and avoiding big rim-protectors. His handles are solid and Isaac creates for the others. Beauchamp is a skilled and talented up-and-comer for the Deacons. I imagine coach Irwin and his staff are excited about Isaac’s potential.
Grant Cosley Grant Cosley 6'0" | SG North Border | 2025 State ND |5’9 SG| North Border
Last season he was a glue guy and a role player for the Eagles. North Border was a Top 10 team for much of the season and Cosley was a vital piece of the Eagles puzzle. Cosley has been improving in the offseason and he has been excellent with the North Border team in their offseason endeavors. Grant is shooting it at a high clip and he gets to the rim on a regular basis. He will still be a young player for North Border but he played a ton of minutes last year and he will be ready to start the year as an impact player. North Border will be a talented squad again in the 2022-2023 season. I would not be surprised at all if Grant averages in the mid to low teens for points. He will also be an unselfish all-around team contributor. He is definitely a “Name to Know” for the upcoming season and the Eagles should start the year as a Top 10 team in Class B.
