I primarily watched the 16 and 17U divisions plus some 15U games.
Here were some of the top scoring guards/wings I viewed:
Ilyes Lear SG 6’4 2024 Eitwanda/CA (Rancho Elite 2024) (Pictured)
The breakout player of the 16U division was definitely Lear. He defends multiple positions and has athleticism and skill. He shot the ball unusually well which included a 3 at the buzzer to send the game into OT and eventually win. His range on his jumper is better then most in the division and he made a few passes that caught my attention in traffic. One of the 16U MVP’s.
Christian Harris SG 6’3 2024 Etiwanda/CA (Rancho Elite 2024)
Another of the 16U MVP’s had a good showing. He scores it from all three levels with catch 3’s, drives to the rim with very few steps and pull-ups. He has long arms to play the passing lanes and gets out in transition. He put up consistent numbers all weekend long.
Khalon Johnson Khalon Johnson 6'4" | CG Eduprize Gilbert | 2024 State AZ Bella Vista Prep (New Mexico D1 2024)
An athletic combo guard simply did everything he could in a 2OT thriller. He hit big shot after big shot. With 3’s, drives, dunks, defending every position and makes impressive passes on a rope. He keeps adding a few wrinkles to his game it seems every viewing and is taking on more of the leader role.
Devin Lewis SG 5’11 2023 Inderkum/CA (Sac Hoyas 2023)
A tough and competitive scoring guard is hard to handle getting downhill. The lefty can can hit the three, has the floater and takes contact about as well as you could with his strong football-like frame. He uses his athletic gifts and length to defend on the ball.
Damian Perez Damian Perez 6'5" | SF Carlsbad | 2023 State NM Carlsbad (New Mexico D1 2023-1)
One of the more under the radar players in the West who is slowly being noticed and talked about. He has impressive bounce with way above the rim dunks, he shoots to the three point line and can get to the basket. His natural feel for the game is high with touch passes and making the extra pass.
Nazir Davis Nazir Davis 6'0" | SG Eduprize | 2024 State AZ Hamilton (New Mexico D1 2024)
A physical guard is powerful and athletic. He likes the contact and will defend with a motor on the ball. He made a bunch of perimeter jumpers with range and some of them were timely important clutch shots. He is a fierce competitor who wears his emotions on his sleeve.
Drew Pierce Drew Pierce 6'1" | SG Linfield Christian | 2024 CA-S Linfield Christian (IE Fire Elite 2024)
A high feel, high IQ bucket getter all weekend long. He carried them a couple games with his ability to score from mid to the 3pt line. He changes speeds and has a tight handle to create proper separation and releases the ball with good elevation on his J’s. He makes smart reads and has steadily improved since April.
Jake Miller Jake Miller 5'11" | PG Rancho Solano Preparatory | 2024 State AZ Rancho Solano Prep (Hoop Society 2024)
One of the more impressive performances was his 33 point outburst. He hit shots from all over the court with 7 triples. He was feeling it and had HUGE confidence. He is a little undersized but he gets his shot off quickly and has a fluid handle to create the space to shoot. He also dimed his teammates with drop offs, threading the needle and drive and kicks.
Tyler Hutton Tyler Hutton 6'5" | SF Cactus | 2024 State AZ Cactus (D1 Nation AZ 2024)
A long fluid athlete made shots from mid to the three point line, got out on the break above the rim, posted up and scored on put backs. His wingspan allows him to play bigger then his height suggests and will grab out of area rebounds and then score it.
