After trailing at the half, Houston Hoops used a big third quarter to pull ahead and then hold off a spirited rally for the victory. Future Division One players were all over the court, and here’s a look at three Texas standouts that impressed on Sunday night and two Oklahomans who have enjoyed great July.
Jaland Lowe Jaland Lowe 6'2" | PG Fort Bend Marshall | 2023 State #124 Nation TX , 6’1 Class of 2023 PG, Houston Hoops
The smooth point guard had a game high 19 points, while also handing out 4 assists. The creation and court awareness, on drives, especially, is what stood out most about his performance. When Houston Hoops had it rolling in the second half, it often featured Lowe getting downhill and setting up teammates for high percentage opportunities. Lowe did his scoring in a variety ways, some on the aforementioned drives, the occasional jumper and also very smart off the ball movement. He was seemingly always in the right place at the right time to score easy points. He comes across as a foundational building block that raises the floor of a college program over a long and productive career.
Connor Dow Connor Dow 6'6" | SF Broken Arrow | 2023 State #252 Nation OK 6’6 Wing, Class of 2023, Team Griffin
The fastest rising recruit in Oklahoma continued his impressive play with a team high 12 points. Dow has a silky shooting stroke and great shot selection, that combined with his size and high motor player makes him an amazing modern 3 and D wing. His handle will need to improve, as his main flaw this month has been some issues handling pressure as a ballhandler. But his understanding of his role as an efficient shooter and defender, has earned offers from Omaha, Oral Roberts, Toldeo and South Dakota State so fair this spring and summer. Power 5 programs are knocking on the door and a big week at the Peach Jam will have his recruitment take off.
Jace Posey Jace Posey 6'4" | SG Houston Strake Jesuit | 2023 State #79 Nation TX 6’4 Guard Class of 2023, Houston Hoops
One of the most impressive athletes in not only this game, but possibly the whole event. He’s a strong defender, who uses his natural gifts to wreak havoc on that end. Posey also “Wow’d” the crowd with his explosive finishing ability. Clear lanes lead to eye popping dunks, but he’s still strong and gifted enough to absorb and avoid contact when finishing in traffic.
Joseph Tugler, 6’7 Forward Class of 2024, Houston Hoops
The rugged power forward is a perfect fit for the “Heart, Hustle, Hardwood” brand of basketball that Kelvin Sampson first made famous at Oklahoma in the 90s and 2000s, and now has brought the Cougars back to national prominence. Tugler plays bigger than his size around the rim thanks to a combination of a strongly built frame, and impressive leaping ability. He had his way around the rim with blocked shots and putbacks. While he feasted as a hustle player creating his own production, he was able to use his strength to ward off taller and longer defenders on the block offensively. A few years into a college strength and conditioning program will have Tugler being even more of a problem around the rim.
Terry McMorris Terry McMorris 6'5" | SF Douglass | 2023 State OK 6’6 Wing/Forward Class of 2023, Team Griffin
Over the month of July, McMorris has been heart of the Griffin team in regards to effort and production. Sunday night was no different, as he flew all over the court with rebounds, blocks, deflections and even slammed one home McMorris has shown an improved handle which allows him to attack the rim as a slasher, which helps match his smart cutting and off the ball movement. The Del City standout still needs to work on skill aspects of the game, especially cutting down on turnovers. But the motor and athleticism he plays with still make him standout as a D1 prospect.
