Throughout this past weekend, there were multiple big time performances from our Indiana prospects at all age groups which should come as no surprise with how many talented in-state players participate in the Grit Region. Today, we take a look at some 2023 guard evaluations.
Aiden Schmitz Aiden Schmitz 5'11" | SG Bloomington South | 2023 State IN – 6’0 PG/SG – Bloomington South – Indiana Elite Side 2023: Schmitz is guard that showed a lot of confidence in the few games I watched of his. Had a few strong baseline drives that he either converted or got to the line. He has the ability to play on the ball but is at his best off the ball. Played some tough defense as well. Could be in for a breakout season at Bloomington South.
Jaleel Edwards – 6’0 PG – Beech Grove – Indiana Elite Side 2023: Edwards is a lanky lead guard that is shifty. Can play one on one well but is just a little wild at times. His long, slim frames helped him well on drives getting around the defense. Just needs to clean up the sloppiness at times.
Drew Knapp – 6’5 SG – Bishop Chatard – Indiana Elite Swish 2023: Knap is a shooter with some bigger size on the wing. Shot the ball well and thought his defense was real solid here. Needed to be stronger on his finishes around the basket however. Knap could be a breakout player at Bishop Chatard this season. Just a smart overall player and shooter.
Dawson Hundley Dawson Hundley 5'10" | PG Blackford | 2023 State IN – 6’1 PG – Blackford – Indiana Elite Swish 2023: Hundley is a strong, athletic lead guard that plays with so much energy and Swish really fed off that at times. Even though his game is a little wild at times, he made some smart plays, especially on the drive. He also made some huge plays down the stretch that kept Swish in a close game. This was easily the best game I have seen from Hundley in the last couple of years.
Ollie Sandman Ollie Sandman 6'3" | SG Shelbyville | 2023 State IN – 6’3 SG – Shelbyville – EG10 2023: Sandman is a shooting guard with an athletic, strong build. Played great defense here and his athletic ability really helps on that end. Shot the ball well from deep and overall just has some nice size on the wing. Really like his controlled pace that he plays at. Smart player too.
Devon Woods Devon Woods 5'10" | PG Pike | 2023 State IN – 5’10 PG – Pike – EG10 2023: Woods easily wins my MVP of the weekend and coaches are really starting to realize how good of a player he is. So crafty with his playmaking and can get to the basket and finish anytime he wants. Made plays when EG10 needed him too and honestly put that team on his back at times. Just a nasty overall player that is going to get a lot of college attention.
Ahmere Carson Ahmere Carson 6'2" | PG Anderson | 2023 State IN – 6’2 PG/SG – Anderson – EG10 2023: Carson is combo guard that was easily the most physical guard I watched all weekend. Knows how to create space with his frame and always figures out ways to put the ball in the hoop. Outside shot still needs work as he is much better at the basket right now. Needs to watch his attitude at times as well as that can be something that holds him back in the long run. Overall, very skilled player.
