The event was held over a four day period with some of the top teams and talent in the Southern California area participating. I was able to attend the event the final day, Tuesday June 14 and here’s a look at some additional top talent I saw.
1. Gavin Murphy – Calabasas 2023
Murphy stood out as capable of playing both guard positions. He’s a very good ball-handler who can dribble under defensive pressure. He hits defenders with a quick burst of speed off the dribble and gets to the rim. He can draw contact in the paint and get to the free-throw line. Uses screens well to get to his spots on the court. Consistent shooter from three-point range and can knock down the three in transition. Moves the ball in the halfcourt and finds open teammates.
2. Aaron Powell – Campbell Hall 2024
Powell is a very good up and coming point guard poised for a big summer/season. I’ve seen him play a couple of times now and he’s one of the more athletic point guards in the Southern California area. He’s quick and decisive with the ball in his hands and looks to finish strong at the rim. Pushes the pace well in transition. He can score, but he plays with a pass first mentality, keeps the ball from stagnating. Very good shooter from distance on catch and shoot or creating his own shot.
3. Chidubem Akametu – King/Drew 2023
Akametu is strong inside. He does a good job of initiating contact in the paint and drawing fouls to get to the free-throw line. He gets good position in the paint and has a soft touch around the rim. He can shoot from the midrange off the catch. Very good rebounder who is able to get inside position and box out. Defensively, he is able to body up one-on-one in the paint and contest and he can also step out and move his feet against guards/wings.
4. Andrew Marz – Eagle Rock 2024
Marz was another player that stood out for his ability to play both guard positions. With the ball in his hands, he displayed a pass first game and was able to find open teammates in the halfcourt. He can hit defenders with a nice crossover and he’s able to draw contact at the rim and get to the free-throw line. Comfortable creating shot off the dribble. He pushes the tempo in transition and he keeps his head up on the break looking for open teammates.
