San Diego sent 8 teams to the loaded field, and I had a chance to catch moments of each team. Here’s my third report of the standouts from the region.
Atreju De La Cruz, 6-0 2025 G, Mission Bay
De La Cruz is among the more underrated 2025 prospects in San Diego, and he showed flashes of why this weekend. When he’s on, De La Cruz knocks down shots from deep, pairing well with teammate Charlie Hutchison as a secondary ball handler and plays with solid effort defensively. He needs to get stronger, which will help him improve against on-ball pressure and finishing in traffic.
Derek Tuason, 5-9 2024 G, San Marcos
Tuason was raining threes from all over the court for the Knights this weekend. He’s grown a bit and is evolving into a solid secondary ball handler and playmaker for his team. But it’s his ability to space the floor that he showcased all weekend.
Derrius Carter-Hollinger Derrius Carter-Hollinger 6'5" | SF St. Augustine | 2023 State CA-S , 6-5 2023 WF, St. Augustine
The versatile Saints forward’s ability to defend the paint, rebound against much bigger opponents and score slashing to the basket and (much improved) from midrange makes Carter-Hollinger, the youngest of the three talented brothers, such an underrated prospect.
Ian De La Rosa, 6-4 2024 W, St. Augustine
De La Rosa, much like Carter-Hollinger, has an underrated impact on the game by doing a lot of the team’s dirty work. He has an excellent motor, pursues loose balls and rebounds with vigor and can knock down open shots from the college three. He also can finish straight line drives through contact or get to the foul line consistently.
Cody Shen, 6-1 2025 G, Torrey Pines
The Falcons looked much better than a week ago at the SDSU Team Camp, and one of the reasons was the continued improvement of Shen, a sophomore on the rise. A wiry combo guard who plays with solid pace, he’s more game manager than dynamic playmaker at this stage, but knocks down open shots and has a nice floater package in the paint. He’s playing with a lot of confidence right now.
