The Indiana squad was playing shorthanded with just nine players. D’Ante Davis (Warren Central H.S. 2022) is already on campus at Seton Hall, Mr. Basketball Braden Smith Braden Smith 6'2" | PG Woodlan | 2024 State IN (Westfield H.S. 2022) is still recovering from offseason foot surgery, Tayshawn Comer (Cathedral H.S. 2022) had a family emergency, and Connor Essegian (Central Noble H.S. 2022) suffered a sprained ankle in the game against the Junior All-Stars on Wednesday.
However, despite being down to just nine active players, Indiana rolled 104-77 to pick up their sixth consecutive victory against Kentucky. The Indiana All-Stars are now a dominant 23-2 in the last 25 matchups dating back to 2009. Let’s rattle off some takeaways and notes from Friday night’s blowout win in Owensboro.
- Indiana University signee C.J. Gunn (Lawrence North H.S. 2022) scored a team-high 20 points in the victory. Gunn’s athleticism and shot-making ability will translate right away and help the Hoosiers as a freshman.
- South Florida bound Ryan Conwell (Pike H.S. 2022) was excellent scoring 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 5 assists. The smooth left-handed guard simply knows how to play offensively and has good size in the backcourt. He will have a chance to be one of the better freshmen in the AAC.
- In the absence of Smith and Comer, two of the best point guards in the state, Indiana needed their other backcourt pieces to step up. Travis Grayson (Chesterton H.S. 2022) and Branden Northern (Silver Creek H.S. 2022) did just that. The duo did not turn the ball over in 45+ minutes of combined play and each scored the ball efficient. Grayson, who is headed to Spring Arbor, finished with 12 points on 5-8 shooting, including 2-2 from beyond the arc. St. Francis (IN) bound Northern was also in double-figures with 10 points.
- Peter Suder (Carmel H.S. 2022) is such a consistent force. He has successfully played the role of a “big man” for an undersized Indiana All-Star team holding his own on the glass and defensively against bigger competition. Suder scored 11 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and collected 5 steals while shooting 5-7 from the floor on Friday night. He is an ASUN Freshman of the Year type of player.
- Javan Buchanan (Lafayette Jefferson H.S. 2022) and Jaxon Edwards (Cathedral H.S. 2022) rounded out the seven Indiana players in double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
- One final note, according to the Indianapolis Star’s Kyle Neddenriep, Eastern Kentucky signee Tayshawn Comer will return to the lineup for the Indiana All-Stars on Saturday night.
The Indiana All-Stars are back in action on Saturday night at the historic Southport Fieldhouse for another game against the Kentucky All-Stars. Indiana now is 102-44 all-time against Kentucky in the All-Star series.
