In this article, we are going to look at the All-State Baseball players that also stand out in basketball. This is a chance to recognize multi-sport athletes that excel at basketball as well as other sports.
Back on June 4th, Thompson was crowned the Class B State Champions. They beat LaMoure-Litchville/Marion by a score of 11-7 in the Championship game. Congrats to the Tommies on the big WIN!
ALL-State B Baseball Players
NDHSCA POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete
Trapper Skalsky (2022) |6-0 SG| Beulah
In basketball, Trapper was a standout guard for the Miners that finished with a 19-5 record. Beulah was a Top 10 ranked team for much of the season. Trapper was an All-Region 7 player and he was named to the Lions Class B All-Star Team. The Lions All-Star games will be played on July 11th and 12th. Trapper was one of the best rebounding guards in North Dakota. He shot well from beyond the arc, and he played very hard. Skalsky will be playing college baseball at Jamestown next year.
First Team All-State
Carson Yale Carson Yale 6'9" | PF Des Lacs Burlington | 2023 State ND (2023) |6’9 PF| Des Lacs Burlington
He did not play in the last high school basketball season because of an injury. Yale is back playing ball and he has been shining all spring. Carson has played great on the Prep Hoops Circuit and at the Sanford Pentagon Tournament Series. Yale recently picked up offers from Minot State and the University of Mary. Carson will be one of the best Class B players next season and he will be nearly an impossible matchup for most teams. With Yale back, I am predicting that the Lakers are a Top 10 caliber team in 2022-2023.
Kyle Odenbach (2022) |6’3 F| Thompson
On the hardwood, Kyle had a great senior season. He was an All-Region 2 player and hands down one of the toughest players. Odenbach was a force to be reckoned with around the basket. This powerful lefty could take over games with his strength and physicality. Odenbach could be a bully on the block or score with fancy footwork. His finishing package was impressive! Kyle could also step out and hit the 3-ball. On defense, he was a stout defender that never gave an inch. The big Tommie did his fair share of rebounding as well. Odenbach will play baseball at Bismarck State next year.
Landon Koenig Landon Koenig 6'7" | PF May-Port-C-G | 2023 State ND (2023) |6’6 PF| May-Port-C-G
A long and gifted multisport athlete. In hoops this year, Koenig was a unanimous All-Region 2 selection. Landon will be one of the top BIGs in the region next season and a sure-fire double-double player. Game in and game out Koenig draws a ton of attention and he is the opposing team’s focal point. Landon still produces and he gets his teammate’s open looks with his unselfish passing. I am expecting Koenig to have a breakout senior season for the Patriots.
Corban Potts (2022) |6’3 PG| LaMoure-Litchville/Marion
Like everyone on this list, Potts is a multisport standout. Corban was a star and one of the best point guards in all of Class B. He helped the Loboes win the Region 3 Championship which sent LLM to the State Tournament. Potts was an All-Region 3 Player that averaged 14.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.1 spg, and 1.4 bpg. Potts was a floor general with refined skills. He did an amazing job at dictating the tempo and he was a very tough defender. Potts had an all-around dynamic senior season in every sport that he played.
Landon Piehl (2022) |6’1 SG| LaMoure-Litchville/Marion
He helped his team finish the season with a 24-4 record and a 3rd place finish at the State Tournament. Piehl was a nice shooter from beyond the arc for the Loboes. If Landon was left alone, there was a good chance it would result in three points for LLM. Piehl is a bright player that knows how to play the game and he shoots it with good mechanics. Landon did a nice job of scoring the basketball all season.
Tate Mart Tate Mart 5'10" | SG LaMoure/Litchville-Marion | 2023 State ND (2023) LaMoure-Litchville/Marion
In the hoops season, Mart and the Loboes won the Region 3 crown and they finished 3rd at the State Tournament. He does a nice job with the ball in his hands. I am expecting Mart to run the 1 next season and to be the primary ballhandler for the Loboes. Mart is a strong player and a quality athlete. He is a steady defender and a disciplined player. Mart is also a standout football player.
Dane Hagler Dane Hagler 6'4" | SG North Star | 2024 ND (2024) |6’4 SG| North Star
In basketball, he led his team to an impressive 19-5 record. Hagler was an All-Region 4 selection that put up All-State type numbers with 20.5 ppg, 6 rpg, 3 spg, 51 FG%, and 78 FT%. Dane is a big and strong guard with impressive athleticism. He can score from all over the floor and dunk with authority. He is wise beyond his years with a high basketball IQ. Hagler will be one of the elite Class B players next season.
Brendan Maasjo (2022) |6’3 G| Central Cass
For basketball, Maasjo missed the entire season for the Squirrels because of an injury. However, Brendan was still an important part of the Central Cass team. Maasjo was a student coach for CC and he did a great job with that role. He came to practice every day, helped with drills, kept stats, and did many other things that go unnoticed but are vital to a team’s success. Maasjo is definitely a team-first player and every team needs more people with his type of attitude and selflessness.
Second Team All-State
Tyson Wick Tyson Wick 6'2" | PG Hazen | 2024 State ND (2024) |6’1 G| Hazen
In hoops, he helped his team get to the Region 7 Championship game and finish with a 17-7 record. Wick is playing AAU hoops with Impact Basketball and he is surrounded by great talent. I am expecting him to come into next season as an improved player ready to make some noise in Region 7. The Bison should be one of the top teams in Class B next season. Wick is a heady and clever player. He shoots the ball well from deep range, he can impact the game with his 3pt shooting. Tyson also has a sweet floater/runner. He sees the floor well and you should expect a big year from the young Mr. Wick.
Tyler Cunningham (2022) |6-0 G| Thompson
This Tommie is not just a stud baseball player, he got it done this winter in basketball as well. Cunnigham and Thompson were a Top 10 team in Class B for a portion of last season and they were the #1 team in Region 2 headed into the tournament. Cunningham was good with the ball in his hands. He was great at finding the hot hand and feeding them the rock. He seems to be very good at post entires, cutting, and finishing at the basket. Cunningham was an excellent role player for the Tommies that played hard and did the little things to help his team.
Brody Schneibel (2023) |6’3 F| Rugby
This Panther is a big & strong left-handed basketball player. Schneibel was an All-Region 6 Player last season. He is a seasoned veteran with multiple years of varsity basketball experience. Brody is a quality athlete that excels in football, basketball, T&F (Javelin), and baseball. On the hardwood, Schneibel can knock down 15-foot jump shots with consistency. He is a physical player that can do a bit of everything. Schneibel and Foster will make for a tough frontcourt next basketball season for the Panthers.
Paxton Ystaas Paxton Ystaas 5'11" | PG Des Lacs Burlington | 2024 State ND (2024) |5’11 PG| Des Lacs Burlington
In basketball, he was the starting PG for the Lakers and he will run the 1 again next year. DLB should be a Top 10 team heading into next season and Ystaas will be the man running the show. He is a smart player with plenty of varsity experience. Paxton has s great floater and he will be a top guard in Region 6. His perimeter jump shot has improved in the last year, this will help Ystaas stretch the defense. As a QB in football and a PG in basketball, Paxton is a natural leader that gets his teammates headed in the right direction. Look for Ystaas and the Lakers to have a big season in 2022-2023.
