Continue ReadingThe Los Lunas Team Camp is a high school basketball tournament that is taking place Friday June 3rd to Sunday June 5th. This tournament is being hosted at Los Lunas High School, Belen Community Center and the Los Lunas High School Auxiliary gym. This tournament includes sixteen varsity level programs from across New Mexico. This article will discuss the players who caught my eyes in the first day of the tournament.
State Champion Alexis Dominguez Alexis Dominguez 5'10" | PG Highland | 2023 NM led Highland in scoring in their loss to Hope Christian this evening. Despite the loss, Alexis made four three pointers in the game with several catch and shoot opportunities. He finished the game with over 20 points and looked like he was in season form. His hard work of being in the gym early definitely has paid off to start off this off-season. Alexis ran the point guard position at a high level this evening.
Kenyon Aguino Kenyon Aguino 6'7" | PF Volcano Vista | 2025 State #257 Nation NM came off a great freshman year for Volcano Vista and picked up where he left off during this tournament. The State Champion controlled the paint on both ends of the floor and has emerged as the primary scoring option for the new look Hawks. He was the games leading scorer in the teams win vs Los Lunas and scored most of his points in the post with his hook shots. Kenyon also stepped behind the three point line and made a pair of three-pointers which made him unguardable.
Sean Alter Sean Alter 6'9" | PF Volcano Vista | 2023 State NM will be a senior next season and he looked like it in Volcano’s win vs Los Lunas. He was Volcano’s second leading scorer vs Los Lunas and was the games leading rebounder. Sean scored most of his points inside the paint and had an impressive dunk in transition. Sean was given the ball several times in the game and looked to score every time down low. This makes Volcano Vista tough to beat.
Hudson Brown Hudson Brown 5'9" | PG Volcano Vista | 2025 State NM was the engine for Volcano Vista in their win vs Los Lunas. He was the one who controlled the pace for the Hawks in their victory. Hudson had some nice pull up jumpers and pulled up with confidence throughout the game. He was a key play-maker during the game and played a huge role defensively against Los Lunas star Jalin Holland Jalin Holland 6'5" | SG Los Lunas | 2025 State #85 Nation NM .
David Gutierrez was the best player for Volcano Vista in the second half vs Los Lunas. When Los Lunas was trying to make a run back into the game, David made a trio of three-pointers in the second half to help Volcano Vista pull away. Each of his three-point shots were created by ball movement and the ball found him in rhythm. He shot the three ball with confidence and was Volcano’s third leading scorer. What separated him was his perimeter defense helping contest shots.
Sandia’s Andrew Hill Andrew Hill 6'2" | CG Sandia | 2023 State NM is one of the craftiest lefties in the state and despite the loss to Atrisco Heritage, he played well for the Matadors. In the first half he set the tone and it helped Sandia jump to an early lead. Andrew had a few nice pull up jumpers and ran the offense at a high level for Sandia. He is one of the teams primary ball handlers.
Chris Parra was the undisputed leader for Atrisco Heritage this evening. He was the best player on the floor and helped his squad comeback and defeat Sandia High School. After a slow start from his team, he took over the game in the second half and led the game in scoring with over 20 points. Chris made at least five triples, which opened up his drives to the basket. His leadership stood out above his scoring and shooting, you heard his voice the entire game holding his teammates and himself accountable on the floor.
Marquise Renfro was the spark that lit a fire under Atrisco Heritage in the second half. He played with the most energy on his team which became contagious to his teammates. He was Atrisco’s second leading scorer and had several aggressive drives to the basket. When Marquise has a full head of steam driving to the rim, it puts the defense at a disadvantage backing up and makes him incredibly difficult to guard with his finishing ability.
Lamarion Colemen played the hardest and with the most energy for Sandia. Despite the loss, he was every where on the court tonight. He scored, rebounded, and defended with extra effort and intensity. His passion and grit is what gets him going and is what helped Sandia in the first half. Lamarion was a fun player to watch this evening.
Latavious Morris Latavious Morris 5'8" | PG Atrisco Heritage | 2025 State NM was one of the main factors in Atrisco’s win this evening vs Sandia. He shot the three ball well, and had some nice scoring inside the three point line that complimented teammate Chris Parra. Latavious made the right decisions tonight and played a complete game for his squad.
Despite the loss to Volcano Vista, Ezra Guest Ezra Guest 6'0" | SG Los Lunas | 2023 State NM was the best player for Los Lunas in the game. His scoring kept the team in striking distance throughout the game but they fell short in the end. Ezra set the tone for Los Lunas and was aggressive looking for his shots while knowing when to get others involved. Ezra knew when to attack the basket and put the ball on the ground and when to pull up from deep.
