Continue ReadingThe IHSAA/IBCA Charlie Hughes Showcase has arguably turned into the biggest recruiting event of the spring and summer months in Indiana. College coaches prefer seeing prospects in a high school setting as opposed to AAU were there is decidedly less structure. With 134 teams, over 30% of all IHSAA schools, divided between Carmel and Westfield over the weekend it was a perfect opportunity for programs at all levels to evaluate many of the top prospects the state has to offer. There already have been multiple scholarship offers handed out since the event came to a close on Sunday afternoon. Now, let’s take a look at eight prospects who really helped their recruitment at the 2022 Charlie Hughes Showcase.
Jake Davis Jake Davis 6'6" | SF Cathedral | 2023 State IN (Cathedral H.S. 2023): It was a great weekend for the recruitment of Cathedral’s 6’6″ sharp-shooter. Everyone already knew that Davis could catch-and-shoot with the best of them from three-point range. However, he showed vastly improved skills off of the dribble over the weekend including scoring 21 points without making a three in a win over Kokomo. Low-major Division I programs are getting really close to offering.
Josh Gatete Josh Gatete 6'8" | PF Penn | 2023 State IN (Penn H.S. 2023): When you find a 6’8″ forward with the length and mobility of this prospect it is always intriguing. Gatete was active around the basket on both ends of the floor throughout the weekend protecting the rim defensively and finishing at a high rate offensively. Division III and NAIA programs should be getting involved sooner rather than later.
Andrew Hedrick Andrew Hedrick 6'0" | PG Columbia City | 2023 State IN (Columbia City H.S. 2023): 32 points. 28 points. 29 points. 29 points. That is what Hedrick put up over the weekend while leading Columbia City to a perfect 4-0 record. The 6’0″ point guard is a very good athlete, great finisher around the basket, and can really shoot the ball off of the dribble as well. He is poised for a big senior season and should see his recruitment really pick up at the small college level.
Kamari Jones Kamari Jones 6'4" | SG Lawrence Centra (IN) / Hilcrest Prep (AZ) | 2023 IN (Lawrence Central H.S. 2023): Jones scored over 20 points in all four games and led Lawrence Central to a 4-0 weekend. The athletic 6’4″ guard scored 24 versus Greensburg, 20 against Evansville Memorial, 29 in a matchup with Plainfield, and 22 points in a win over Bosse. He is an outstanding shot-maker from the mid-range out to beyond the arc. Offers should start rolling in soon for Jones. Division I’s are expressing serious interest.
Jaylen Mullen Jaylen Mullen 6'0" | PG North Daviess | 2023 State IN (North Daviess H.S. 2023): Defending Class 1A state champions North Daviess will be making the jump all the way to 3A this season. At Charlie Hughes, ND went 2-2 and Mullen was excellent showcasing his scoring ability. The 6’0″ guard averaged 23.2 points per game and had several college coaches from various levels following him closely. Great shot-maker.
James Stasey James Stasey 6'9" | C Fishers | 2023 State IN (Fishers H.S. 2023): There may not have been a prospect that had more coaches talking over the weekend than this 6’8″-6’9″ Fishers big man. Stasey is excellent on the roll showcasing great hands and finishing ability at the rim. In two games against Valparaiso and Cathedral the center scored probably 25 total points on 75% shooting. Love his mobility and length. He will end up being one of the most sought after small college big men in the class.
Ian Stephens Ian Stephens 6'5" | PF New Palestine | 2023 State IN (New Palestine H.S. 2023): Stephens had a great spring with JH1 IndyElite and backed it up with a fantastic showing at the Charlie Hughes Showcase. The 6’5″ athletic forward led New Palestine to a 4-0 record while putting up 23, 23, 26, 30 point performances. The left-hander is still at his best when finishing around the basket, but he has expanded his game out to the three-point line as well. Plays with an excellent motor and communicates on the floor.
Logan Webb Logan Webb 6'3" | SG Linton-Stockton | 2023 State IN (Linton-Stockton H.S. 2023): College programs always recruit shooting and Webb showcased that skill at a high level throughout the weekend. Webb has good size on the wing and excellent catch-and-shoot ability. He averaged 21.5 points per game while Linton-Stockton went a perfect 4-0 against good 3A/4A competition. Excellent prospect for small colleges to recruit heading into July.
