Continue ReadingLast week Brookings athletic director Mike Jewett announced the hiring of David Rohrbach as the new head boys basketball coach for the Brookings Bobcats. Rohrbach will also be teaching in the school district. This seems like a great hire for Brookings, Rohrbach has a winning pedigree as he has qualified for the State Tournament 3 times in the past 3 years. He has a winning percentage of 71% as a head coach. David will have his work cut out for him as the Bobcats had a 1-18 record last season. Brookings plays in AA and they see fierce competition game in and game out. Rohrbach loves teaching the game of basketball and he will put in the time to build the Bobcat program up to a competitive level. Good luck to Brookings and coach David Rohrbach in the coming year!

Q & A with Coach David Rohrbach
PHD: What does it mean for you to be the next head boys basketball coach Brookings?
Coach Rohrbach: “I’m very excited to be the head boy’s basketball coach at Brookings! In my opinion, it is a town that knows and loves basketball. I am super excited to get started and get in the gym again.”
PHD: Can you talk about your basketball playing career?
Coach Rohrbach: “I played a couple of years sub-varsity at Aberdeen Central and transferred to Aberdeen Christian my senior year where I was an all-conference player.”
PHD: Can you talk about your coaching career?
Coach Rohrbach: “I have been the head coach for Aberdeen Christian for the past 7 years, 2 years as an assistant before that. My career Coaching Record is 110-44. We have been to State for the past 3 years. The first year we didn’t get to play (COVID year).”
PHD: How would you define your coaching style?
Coach Rohrbach: “I would describe my coaching style as, energetic, competitive, and relational.”
PHD: What type of offense do you envision your teams will run?
Coach Rohrbach: “I like to get up the floor on offense and do some early secondary break sets that get us into our offense. I love to teach kids how to play and read the game.”
PHD: How do you plan to build the program for the Bobcats?
Coach Rohrbach: “I believe that building a program starts with first instilling a love for the game in your players. After that, building an identity that loves to play defense, because they understand its importance to winning. Creating a culture in which it is the norm for kids to be in the gym year-round working on their game. Last but not least, connecting with and building up the younger age groups coming up.”
PHD: What are the offseason plans for the Brookings basketball program?
Coach Rohrbach: “We plan to get to a couple more team camps, which will be really important for us as things are new, and we want to install as much as possible this summer so we can hit the ground running when the season starts.”

Coach Rohrbach: “Outside of basketball, I enjoy watching football and The Office.”
