Top Three Prospect Notes
Isaac Asuma Isaac Asuma 6'3" | PG Cherry | 2024 State #102 Nation MN of Cherry. A top three prospect in the junior class, Isaac comes into his junior year looking about an inch taller and definitely several pounds of muscle stronger. Asuma’s teams win, the all around lead guard abilities of creation, leadership, and setting the table are there, and he’s also the all around playmaker that becomes a nationally ranked talent. Didn’t have a great weekend shooting the ball but when games were on the line Isaac stepped forward. He had a 14 point run to end the game against Mankato Loyola and his team was one basket away from finally besting the pesky Hayfield Vikings. And let’s not forget that attacking game winner in overtime over the length of Buay Koak Buay Koak 6'4" | SG Lyle-Pacelli | 2023 State MN at the cup!
Isaac Matti Isaac Matti 6'1" | SG Hayfield | 2023 State MN of Hayfield. Matti scored 24 in the title game plus blocked an Asuma shot at the buzzer to send the victory to his team. This kid simply wins game after game. He’s the strongest player on the floor but also one of the most skilled and he will out compete his opponent. As for the shot creation, I love how he reads defenders. Yesterday we saw him lift his defender and then attack left to the middle to his pull-up. We saw him use fakes to step his defender off so Isaac could clear to hit the jumper. The step back is strong and Matti uses that strong frame very well to be a screen buster, a rebounder, and a deep paint finisher.
Lawson Godfrey Lawson Godfrey 6'1" | SG Mankato Loyola | 2023 State MN of Mankato Loyola. Lawson has grown so much that I almost didn’t recognize him. A little taller, a lot stronger, and his game has definitely matured. Against Cherry, Lawson knocked out four threes which speaks for itself but I was equally impressed with Lawson going into the paint to get needed baskets so his team could try and stay with Cheery. This spoke volumes to me because Lawson has the perimeter skill, but in this game his team also needed him to get into the paint and fight for scores as well. Had a game high 24 against Cherry on 9 of 15 shooting.
The More You Know!
Cass Lake-Bena defeated New Life Academy this weekend and they did that with one of their top guys – Kaydin Lee Kaydin Lee 5'10" | SG Cass Lake-Bena | 2024 State MN – not at the event. Impressive win without one of their best guys
Lyle/Pacelli lost two games but I was very impressed with how they took Cherry to over time AND beat New Life Academy. That says a lot about what they can be next year.
Hayfield basketball remains on top, plus their baseball team – that has hoopers – is 22-2 and playing in the state baseball tournament tomorrow.
Cherry has their talent back from last year plus 2025 sophomore Noah Sundquist of Chisholm was with them yesterday as was 2025 Carson Brown who played varsity for Hibbing last year and both played well.
