The recent introduction of two live period sessions has only added to the importance of this month. Here is a rundown of 10 players to keep an eye on throughout these next several weeks.
Gibraltar Coleman Gibraltar Coleman 6'6" | PF Flint Hill | 2023 State VA | Flint Hill (VA) ’23
Coleman is on track to being one of the more productive players in the area next season. He is averaging nearly 20 points and 12 rebounds during 3 games at Capitol Hoops Summer League. Coleman is not only a forceful paint presence, but he is also a threat from three. Versatility will be one of his main selling points.
Justin Gilmore Justin Gilmore 6'1" | CG Jackson-Reed | 2024 State MD | Jackson-Reed (DC) ’24
Gilmore is one of the impact transfers that has emerged during the offseason. He figures to be a consistent double-figure scorer for the Tigers. Gilmore brings athleticism and energy to the backcourt. He will help his team control the glass and find ways to put the ball in the hole.
Aidan Harris Aidan Harris 6'6" | SF St. Marys | 2023 State #293 Nation MD | St. Mary’s (MD) ’23
Harris is averaging close to 18 points and 10 boards per contest through 4 games at Capitol Hoops Summer League. He is tough as nails and playing some of his best basketball at the moment. Coaches should take note during the June live period.
Dj Holloway Dj Holloway 6'0" | CG Hayfield | 2023 State VA | Hayfield (VA) ’23
Holloway is a lockdown defender who contributes all across the board for the Hawks. He is a proven winner who stuffs the stat sheet and competes with high intensity. Holloway is also a sneaky athlete who is known to finish above the rim if given a lane.
Jhace Johnson Jhace Johnson 6'1" | SG Takoma Academy | 2023 State MD | Takoma Academy (MD) ’23
Johnson is another impact transfer to watch this summer. He currently leads Takoma Academy in scoring this summer. Johnson scores with relative ease. He can shoot the three but is also adept at getting buckets from the in-between areas.
Isaiah Mbeng Isaiah Mbeng 6'2" | PG Churchill | 2023 State MD | Churchill (MD) ’23
Mbeng is quickly establishing a reputation for his dynamic playmaking ability. He is one of the better passers you’ll find. Mbeng is also much improved defensively and is constructing an identity as a stopper on that end of the floor.
RJ Newton RJ Newton 6'4" | SF Archbishop Spalding | 2024 MD | Archbishop Spalding (MD) ’24
Newton is one of the more experienced players on a relatively young Spalding team. He is learning how to impact the game without scoring as we saw during his team’s win over McNamara to kick off their summer league campaign. Newton took some pivotal charges and blocked a couple of shots to keep his team in control. Look for more of the same from the blossoming prospect this summer.
Jason Penn | Marshall (VA) ’24
Penn has been an important player for a very good NOVA Cavs 16u team during the grassroots season. One of the things he does best from the guard position is rebounding. Penn has been a difference-maker for his squad on both ends. Look for that to translate with his high school team.
Martin Somerville Jr. | Bishop McNamara (MD) ’24
Somerville enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign and looks ready to parlay that into a strong run of play this summer and beyond. He has become more explosive which has helped him become more active on the boards. It looks like Somerville could have added responsibilities and looks ready to take on the task.
Nick Viqueira Nick Viqueira 6'2" | CG Bullis | 2023 State MD | Bullis (MD) ’23
You will be hard-pressed to find a more improved player locally over the last 12 months than Viqueira. He’s gone from a fringe rotation player to a fixture on the court for the Bulldogs. Viqueira’s toughness and improved skill base are part of the reason why he has been so effective.
