But without trying to be an all-inclusive list, here are some of the top performances from 17U Kansas guards (in alphabetical order):
Asa Barnes Asa Barnes 6'2" | SG Southeast | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, Wichita Southeast HS, Hunt United:
Barnes had the ball on a string and kept the Hunt team racing at top speed at Wichita. Barnes is a pure point guard who tries to run the offense and get his teammates involved. He’s quick and springy and can change direction on a dime. Barnes scored in double figures consistently by getting buckets at every level and drawing a lot of fouls.
Britton Dutton Britton Dutton 6'0" | SG Argo Comm | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2023, Ellinwood HS, SSA Hoops Elite Black:
Dutton is slippery through the lane and when caught in traffic close to the goal can get shots off from very possible angle. He isn’t afraid to attack a crowd with the dribble and more often than not finds a way to score or get fouled. He didn’t hoist a lot of threes in Wichita, but he is always a threat to pull up from well behind the arc.
Garrett Robertson Garrett Robertson 5'10" | PG Hutchinson | 2023 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, 2023, Hutchinson HS, Oz Elite Haynes (pictured):
Robertson is on of the sharpest of sharpshooters around. He is good with the ball in his hands and can distribute or drive and dish. But he’s most dangerous when he’s off the ball and can run to open spots. Once he gets an opening, he is deadly.
Kobe Smith Kobe Smith 6'1" | CG Andover Central | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2023, Wichita Southeast HS, Oz Elite Haynes:
Part of the reason Robertson could play off the ball and knock down shots is because he was running with Smith, a slick ball handler. Smith scores in double figures routinely, but doesn’t have to shoot a lot to impact the game. He knows when to push it and when to get the half-court offense in gear. He’s always in control with the ball in his hands.
Hunter Vaughn Hunter Vaughn 5'11" | CG Colby | 2023 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2023, Colby HS, Western Kansas Elite Blue:
Vaughn really impressed with his command of the game. He directed the offense and got everyone involved. He has a great team concept and makes good entry passes to the bigs. He can knock down the 3-pointer on the move and off the dribble. He played some fine defense too.
Zion Young Zion Young 6'2" | CG Life Prep | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-3 guard, 2023, Campus HS, Hunt United:
Young is a big, powerful guard who can get into the lane for a shot opportunity pretty much every possession. He has a quick first step and nice handle that permits him to get a defender on his hip. Once he gets going, he’s too strong and tall for most guards to defend. That leads Young to draw a lot of fouls, getting to the line several times a game.
