In this article we’re going to be taking a look at some of the top new names from the 2024 class that stood out this past weekend.
Bransyn Copas Bransyn Copas 6'0" | PG North Adams | 2024 State OH , 6’0 PG North Adams 2024 Indiana Elite Royals: Copas was getting active against All Ohio Red, sparking their coaches to ask me if I knew who he was. Copas was a guy who had long been on my radar after a big Sophomore season down in southeast Ohio, but after finally seeing him in person I’m able to confirm that the hype is real. Copas is not afraid to create for himself and has a shake and bake style handle with quick crossovers and spin moves that allow him to create space for himself. Copas prefers to shoot off the bounce and isn’t afraid to launch from deep if you don’t at least hedge a ball screen. Copas is a small town sleeper who should receive some scholarship interest next spring.
Hayden Nigro Hayden Nigro 6'4" | SG Louisville | 2024 State OH , 6’3 SF Louisville 2024 Team Clutch-Kovach: Nigro was a part of Team Clutch’s gold bracket championship this weekend, as his team upset host All Ohio Red in the 16 U championship. Nigro is a 6’3 WG who can play either the 2 or the 3 at the next level. On an undersized Team Clutch squad, Nigro has to guard players typically taller than him and has a lot of rebounding responsibility. I was also impressed with Nigro’s shooting ability from the outside and liked his length defensively. Louisville is a sleeper Division II school next season with a star in Will Aljancic Will Aljancic 6'6" | SF Louisville | 2023 State OH and some intriguing 2025 pieces to pair with Nigro after the Leopards went on a deep playoff run in March.
Lane Bruning Lane Bruning 6'7" | PF New Hope Christian | 2024 State OH , 6’6 PF New Hope Christian 2024 Mid Ohio Pumas Roberts: Bruning is a total unknown around Ohio as the 6’6 PF is homeschooled but plays for New Hope Christian in the Circleville area. Bruning has only been playing basketball for a couple of years but the growth he’s already shown is tremendous. At 6’6 he can stretch the floor by knocking down jumpers and is learning how to be more physical by playing up a grade on a southeast Ohio based squad. Bruning has some obvious potential and should see a lot of small college interest next spring and summer.
Shaheem Nieves Shaheem Nieves 6'3" | SF Thomas Worthington | 2024 State OH , 6’3 SF Thomas Worthington 2024 Mid Ohio Pumas Mills: Nieves stood out for a different Mid Ohio Pumas squad, this one in the 16 U age bracket. Nieves is an athletic wing who skied above the rim for multiple transition layups and an explosive dunk off a steal. Nieves is fast in transition and looks to beat the defense down the court with his long strides. I’ll be interested to see how many minutes Nieves gets on a Thomas Worthington because his physical tools are intriguing and he has some upside if he can get a more consistent jump-shot.
Toby Gage Toby Gage 6'1" | SG Olentangy Liberty | 2024 OH , 6’1 SG Olentangy Liberty 2024 Nova-Bailey: Gage rocks the rec specs and makes it rain from long distance, knocking down a lot of 3-pointers this weekend for his Nova Village squad. His entire team moves the ball well and had a great pool play record, before falling early in the gold bracket. Gage was ready to shoot off the ball and made the defense pay for leaving him open. Olentangy Liberty graduated a majority of their scoring production and Gage will be looked to replace some of the scoring production that is walking out the door.
