He runs the Hawks Elite AAU program and though his team is not primarily composed of Tennessee-based players, he does feature Tylon Chatman Tylon Chatman 6'0" | PG Haywood | 2023 State TN and Janerus Snipe, two high school stars of the Class of 2023.
The purpose of this article is to pick Coach Carlisle’s brain on their April performance and long-term potential.
Tylon Chatman Tylon Chatman 6'0" | PG Haywood | 2023 State TN (Haywood)
“He has been really good. The first tournament he came off the bench for me and actually lead my team in scoring.”
“He was what we said he was. Crafty. He could stand to gain some weight. Plays bigger than his weight. A dog player. We play fullcourt, pressure 94’. He is really good at pressuring guys in the backcourt and speeding them up.”
“He is really good at mid-range. He did a good job at passing the ball and getting others involved. He was really, really good.”
In Atlanta (2nd LIVE Period)
“He kind of went backwards a little bit. I guess it was because the first tournament was so good. He was good [in Atlanta], but he was not as consistent. In Indy he was good in all four games. In Atlanta, he was good in two games, but just kind of there in the other two games. That is kind of typical for high school players.”
What type of guard is he? PG, SG, Both?
“He strictly a point guard, but one thing he does do good is catch-and-shoot off the ball. He has been doing a good job playing off the ball, catching and shooting. He can be strictly a point guard, but he is not opposed to going off the ball. That was something that I was a little bit worried about before. ’Who is going to be able to play well off the ball?’ But, he has adjusted really well. Creating. Catching and shooting. A little bit better than expected. Sneaky athletic. Fast as crap.”
“I push him too. He has been getting in the gym. He has gained like five pounds the last two weeks.”
Janerus Snipe (Haywood)
“He is one of those under-utilized, undersized post players. Once he gets position, he is just a load [to defend] trying to score the ball.”
“He carves a lot of space and rebounds outside of his position.”
“I did tell him he has some baby fat that you can shed. I told him that layup you just did can be a drop-step dunk. But, again, that weight also helps him out in some cases because he is so strong.”
“He will be limited as his weight in a sense. If he never sheds that weight, he will be a true four. He reminds me some of Draymond Green, with the body-type. He can’t run an offense like him though. He is real physical, kind of dominant on the defensive end. He has been really good, because he is effective and he plays bigger than his size, which is why he can play the “4” and the “5”.”
“He started slow as everybody got used to him. He got a lot better as they figured him out.”
Can he attack from the wing?
“I have seen him attack from the wing. It is hard to say. I would have to see more, outside of the AAU form. We have run him at the top where he initiates the offense and has to make a backdoor pass.”
“I don’t see him as a 3, but if he loses weight he can maybe play the 3/4. I don’t see him as a “5”. If he had to play the “5” he would be just fine, but I see him as a post-player that can pick and pop. He can’t be a shooting guard. Haha. I know that.”
What is his size now?
6’7″ 225. I think he can chisel up some. If he gets in there and cuts baby fat and gets to 215 he could be beast.”
Does he play football? Just naturally strong dude?
No, a lot of people ask that. Naturally big. Strong.
