Q & A with coach Shane Warwick
PHD: Who are the three biggest impact kids on the team?
Coach Warwick: “Tate Gerdes – Tate is the backbone of the team. He is very athletic, has good length, and does anything and everything that translates to winning. He can and will guard 1-5 if asked. He does not need to score to impact the game in a big way, but can score from all 3 levels of the court.“
“Blake Ellwein – Blake is the ultimate team player. He is very skilled, shoots the ball from deep at a high percentage, and has a high IQ. His length and athleticism allow him the ability to guard multiple spots on the floor.”
“Carson Nickles – Carson is a leader with a high IQ. He understands and controls the pace of the game. He shoots it well and makes great decisions to consistently put himself or his teammates in a great position to win.“
PHD: Who are your “unsung heroes”?
Coach Warwick: “Cooper Goodbary – Cooper is a knock-down shooter with a huge upside. When he locks in on defense he is a difference-maker for this team.”
“Walker Warwick – Walker comes off the bench to energize his teammates by knocking down a 3, taking a charge, or making a pass for the assist.”
“Ben Meyer – Ben has battled some injuries this summer, but when he is healthy is a difference-maker for this team. Rebounding, scoring, and defending – he is a beast and can be hard to contain in the post.“
PHD: Who are your best defenders?
Coach Warwick: “Jackson Wadsworth – undersized in the paint, there isn’t a rebound or loose ball that he doesn’t get…or dive on the floor trying. His ability to guard all positions with speed and strength is special. This kid has a toughness that most coaches only dream about having in a player.“
“Logan Mebius – he can guard 94 feet from the point guard position. He is a 400m specialist in track and it shows on the basketball court with his ability to keep players in front of him and lockdown dribble penetration.“
PHD: Who are your most versatile players?
Coach Warwick: “Tate Gerdes – at 6’2 Tate is a tough guard for any team. He can play 1-5 and uses that versatility to propel Team Warwick 14U in big games. He has guard skills, solid post moves, and rebounds with the best of them.“
“Blake Ellwein – Blake can block shots in the paint, guard a big guy and then step out and hit the 3. His game is expanding and evolving week.“
PHD: What defines your team?
Coach Warwick: “They are a team! They play for each other and know that their individual success is a product of commitment to their teammates and doing what we do.“
PHD: What has led to the team’s success this summer?
Coach Warwick: “Communication is something that we stress in our program. Players understand and star in their roles. We play for each other!“
