During Part I of this two-part series, we highlighted players from playoff squads who should be assuming new responsibilities. In part two, we will highlight ten more preps that should see increased roles. Transitioning into their new roles may be the boost some need to increase their level of recruiting while others will help their teams chances of winning.
McKennis Savoie McKennis Savoie 6'2" | CG North Central | 2024 State LA (North Central)
It is hard imagining a Hurricane team without Reginald Stoner Reginald Stoner 6'1" | CG North Central | 2022 State LA . However, when a team has a talent like Savoie, a lot of that slack will be taken. Savoie is an explosive athlete who can score from inside and out. He is usually locked in on defense as well. Having the opportunity to lead on both sides of the ball may be trouble for the opposition.
Braylan McNeal Braylan McNeal 6'6" | SF Ruston | 2023 State LA (Ruston)
McNeal is one of the more gifted players that Louisiana has. He may not have the big scoring numbers but he was named all-state for a reason. McNeal can defend every position on a high school floor, rebound, and score. He is improving at shooting the three and becoming a more complete player before our eyes. McNeal may have a true breakout season this year.
Malachi Evans Malachi Evans 6'9" | C Hamilton Christian | 2023 State LA (Hamilton Christian)
At 6’9″, Evans towers over almost every player in the Boot. May and June should give him an opportunity to use that height and take his game to another level. Evans plays alongside one the best guards in the Boot in Deion Ware Deion Ware 6'4" | CG Hamilton Christian | 2023 TX , so he should get a lot of touches in the paint. His star should be trending up after these two months.
Chris Carpenter Chris Carpenter 5'9" | PG Huntington | 2023 State LA (Huntington)
Losing an all-state, 4 year starting guard is rough. That is what the Huntington Raiders are facing this summer. However, it helps to have Chris Carpenter Chris Carpenter 5'9" | PG Huntington | 2023 State LA stepping in. Knocking the rust off after sitting during his transfer year will be the biggest chore for Carpenter. However, he is a smart guard who can drop dimes as well as score. May and June will be what he needs to get his groove back.
Noah Brookter Noah Brookter 6'2" | CG Soutide | 2024 State LA (Southside)
Brookter is part of a talented Sharks crew who made it to the second round of the 5A playoffs. He has the talent to play at a high level on both sides of the ball and some serious bounce to go with that talent. Coach Todd Russ coming in will help Brookter channel his talents and enhance his defensive presence. May and June are going to be huge for his development.
Jyrin Sowell Jyrin Sowell 6'3" | SG Captain Shreve | 2024 State LA (Captain Shreve)
Sowell is going into his junior year concentrating solely on basketball. The way he plays both sides of the ball, this will only help the Gators in class 5A. Sowell already took on the charge of guarding the opponent’s best player. The extra reps on offense during May and June will help his offensive game grow. Sowell has a scary ceiling and committing to basketball may help him reach it sooner than later.
Aries Lewis Aries Lewis 6'6" | SF Port Allen | 2024 State LA (Port Allen)
Lewis is a double double waiting to happen every time he steps on the hardwood. Without Jordan Brooks Jordan Brooks 6'6" | SF Port Allen | 2022 State LA , Lewis should get an opportunity to expand his game outside of the paint. June will be the time for him to build that consistency. The fact that he has not tapped into his full potential is scary. Pairing an outside game with his double-double ability would make Port Allen very hard to beat.
Trevor Daughtery Trevor Daughtery 6'2" | PG JS Clark Leadership | 2023 State LA (Opelousas)
Daughtery is one of the better point guards in the 2023 class. He is not known to the state even though he was the point guard on a JS Clark team that made back-to-back visits to Marsh Madness. Now at Opelousas, he has stepped up in classification which means that class 4A is in trouble. Daughtery is a floor general who can go for big numbers if given the opportunity. He is definitely one to watch.
Jordan Mathews Jordan Mathews 6'5" | SF Peabody | 2024 State LA (Peabody)
Mathews has held down the post since he has stepped on campus for the Warhorses. Now, going into his junior season, he may be one of the hardest players to stop on the hardwood. He is a very good rebounder, who has gained more confidence handling the ball this grassroots season. If he becomes a player who rebounds and pushes the pace, Peabody is going to be very hard to handle.
Darius Anderson Darius Anderson 6'2" | CG Southwood | 2023 State LA (Southwood)
Anderson began to blossom for the Cowboys last season. He moved his way into the starting lineup and was probably their most consistent performer. Now, he will have to carry a large offensive load to go with 2024 forward Jeremiah Evans Jeremiah Evans 6'10" | C Southwood | 2024 State #249 Nation LA . Anderson gained confidence as a spot up shooter. Putting it on the deck and getting to the rim more this time of the year will make him an even bigger threat.
These players should be part of an entertaining May and June for high school basketball. The various team camps around the Boot will give these players, and the ones in the previous edition, ample opportunities to get better as players. Get your popcorn ready. We will see some high quality hoops from these twenty players and others.
