I focused on Varsity and JV Gold Boys divisions and I ended up watching 20+ teams.
Here were some of the 2022-23 SG standouts from the weekend:
2023
Ashton Reese Ashton Reese 6'5" | SG Pinnacle | 2023 State AZ Pinnacle (Factory)
Reese goes in stretches where he seems to be automatic from the three point line. He has one of the smoothest shots out there. It doesn’t hurt that he is taller then most guards and simply shoots over his defenders. His pull-up from mid-range is one of the best off the dribble. He is a sneaky good passer and is always more athletic then you think he is.
KJ Perry KJ Perry 6'2" | SG Hillcrest Prep | 2024 CA-S Gilbert (AZ Select Capp)
A hyper athletic quick-twitched guard seems to fly on the break. He plays at a different gear then most out on the court. Once he turns the corner he can throw it down or finish off tough contested layups. His mid-range pull-up is becoming a weapon, as he gets incredible elevation to offset him being a little undersized. He gives high effort on the ball defensively, which we have come to expect from the Tigers program.
Harrison Reede Harrison Reede 6'2" | SG Phhoenix Prep | 2023 State AZ Phhoenix Prep (AZ Select Capp) (Pictured)
One of the better catch shooters in the class. The South Dakota native squares up quickly and gets balanced to launch his three from nearly anywhere. He was a big difference in many highly contested wins over the weekend. He takes care of the ball plus will smartly take charges.
Canyon Torres Canyon Torres 6'2" | SG Salpointe Catholic | 2023 State AZ Salpointe Catholic (AZ Select Tucson)
A tough and physical guard seems to play with a chip on his shoulder. He is steadily improving his passing skills and feel for the game and makes reads quicker for the assist. He uses his stronger build to carve out space and get downhill and will hit perimeter jumpers. His ability to plays hard for the entirety of a game is impressive.
Jaydon S Cameron Jaydon S Cameron 6'4" | SG Deer Valley | 2023 State AZ Deer Valley (AZ Firestorm Black)
A sharp shooter for the SkyHawks has a consistent stroke. He has impeccable ball rotation and squares up quickly with a fast shooting trigger. He plays a smart floor game and you rarely see him take bad shots and he makes good decisions with the ball. He is slowly getting stronger and has a more all-around game to contribute in wins.
Connor Fitzgerald Connor Fitzgerald 6'3" | CG Brophy Prep | 2023 State AZ Brophy Prep (Peak Basketball Premier)
The lefty sniper will be pivotal for the Broncos this year for him to take another leap forward. He looks a little stronger, and besides his pretty stroke from the three point line, he can take the ball to the basket better with either hand and manages to get fouled or score it.
Davis Hester Davis Hester 6'0" | SG Liberty | 2023 State AZ Liberty (Factory)
An off the ball shooter was playing well this weekend. He made some big threes in timely moments to keep them in games and is handling the ball more fluidly. He also uses his length on defense to play the passing lanes with his quick feet and hands.
2022
Luke Arington Luke Arington 6'3" | SG Shadow Ridge | 2022 State AZ Shadow Ridge (The Fellas)
A skilled shooter has range and is comfortable from mid to the three point line. Once that first one goes down, he gets hot quickly and rattles them off. He is very confident and his upper body has improved in the last year. He can now handle the contact better to score it in the paint and will defend.
Israel Pablos SG/CG 6’0 2022 Fairfax (PAL Elite)
An unsigned senior guard really knows how to play. He can play on the ball and thinks the game with smart passes but is best off. He catches and shoots it at a good clip from the three point line and is crafty to get into the paint or pull-up from mid-range. He is looking to play at the next level at a local junior college.
Aaron Quinones SG 6’2 2022 Imagine Prep (The Fellas)
A new prospect for me is a knockdown shooter. The Fellas spread the floor and he cashed in and hit multiple triples. He has a good feel for the game and plays with a high IQ. He is a little lean but knows how to get open and get his shot off.
