I focused on Varsity and JV Gold Boys divisions and I ended up watching 20+ teams.
Here were some of the 2022-23 power forward and center standouts from the weekend:
2022
Trey Phillips Trey Phillips 6'6" | PF Brophy College Prep | 2022 State AZ Brophy Prep (Firestorm Elite)
The long forward is on his way to Winchendon for a prep school next year, but shined on Sunday morning. He plays way above the rim, blocks shots, rebounds out of area and plays with tremendous energy. He has put on it looks like 10 lbs of muscle and he is trending upwards for next years class of 2023.
2023
Noah Amenhauser Noah Amenhauser 7'0" | C Estrella Foothills | 2023 State #270 Nation AZ Estrella Foothills (Factory)
The big man dominated in the paint on defense. He grabbed every rebound and seemed to block anything near him. He showed off his skill to the three point line facing up and from the elbow. He loves the drop step move and showed energy.
Seydou Tamboura Seydou Tamboura 6'7" | PF St. Mary's | 2023 State AZ St. Mary’s (AZ Select Capp)
A powerfully built power forward is morphing into your classic rim runner. He throws down high flying dunks and rattles the rim off of feeds. He will step out occasionally to the the perimeter but most of his points are in the paint. He holds his ground about as well as you can with his strength and length.
Jahki Gupton Jahki Gupton 6'7" | SF Eduprize | 2023 State AZ Phhoenix Prep (AZ Select Capp)
A long and very lean athletic forward had a little breakout weekend for himself. He challenged all oncoming shots and recorded many blocks each game. He was a glass cleaner using his length and athleticism and threw it down on the break. He hit a few triples this weekend and scored it efficiently around the cup.
Michael DeHorney Michael DeHorney 6'8" | PF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State AZ Hamilton (Firestorm Elite)
A long, lean and athletic forward brought a lot of activity this weekend. He gobbles up rebounds at its highest point, blocks shots and plays with energy. He is mostly an inside scorer but he showed he is working on his game as he stepped out and hit a three. He looked comfortable shooting it and he should be a terror this season for the Huskies.
Max Lightfoot Max Lightfoot 6'5" | PF Gilbert Christian | 2023 State AZ Gilbert Christian (AZ Select Capp)
A forward who plays both forward spots for his HS and club teams. He works well inside for rebounds, will challenge shots and he can dunk it easily. He can rip through and score through contact and has some post footwork to utilize. He will make the occasional three and he will be very important to the Knights success this upcoming season.
Dalton Graham Dalton Graham 6'7" | SF Sunrise Mountain | 2023 State AZ Sunrise Mountain (Firestorm Black)
One of the more unique forwards in the rising senior class is Dalton. He is a rare point forward and made some of the best passes in the varsity division that I viewed. He has good physicality to rebound and will dunk it and score inside. Once the ball is in his hands in transition, you better be ready since he will find you in stride. Him and Gittens will form a tough duo up front for the Mustangs.
Ethan Faas Ethan Faas 6'5" | PF Arcadia | 2023 State AZ Phhoenix Prep (AZ Firestorm Black)
The big strong lefty keeps playing well every tournament. He uses his girth and size to crash the boards and boxes out his man. He has a pretty stroke to the three point line, which is starting to become a weapon for the next level. He may not jump over you but his skill, strength and IQ translate.
Joshua Tillman Joshua Tillman 6'4" | PF Skyline Prep | 2023 State AZ Skyline Prep (PAL Elite) (Pictured)
A thicker and stronger face-up four-man. He can battle with taller players with his length and girth and can take advantage of mismatches and dribble right by. His next level skill is definitely his shooting. He shoots it consistently from mid to the three point line and I like what I saw in my first viewing of him.
